I don't think you have to try hard to confuse people on what a Kindle is. So far, I've known several people who think a Kindle just means an eReader.
I've had to tell quite a few people that what they saw at JB Hifi, Officeworks and a number of bookstores was not a Kindle, nor was it a type of Kindle. Usually what they've seen is an iRiver, Kobo or Hanvon. Maybe Kindle will become like Hoover, where the brand becomes a common noun. |

I've never encountered Kindle or iPod being used in the general way one says "Kleenex." About the only contemporary version of that phenomenon I've encountered is any and every Android phone being called a Droid, which seems to be on its way out. I suspect product cycles may move too fast these days for the emergence of "household names." I've heard people say of my Nook Color, "Oh that's one of those...like a Kindle?" because they weren't sure what to call the general class of devices (e-readers), but they knew in saying so that it was not a Kindle.
You're kidding around, but the absurdity of making that statement about a music player demonstrates how misguided it is to consider media "ecosystems" as a selling point. I'm not about to purchase a device or install a piece of software that makes it too great a burden to shop around, be it for books, music, software or video. I don't balk at purchasing files on one machine and transferring them to another, but if it's going to take more steps than that to use files from a retailer of my choice on your machine, I'm simply not buying your machine. |

[QUOTE=RockdaMan;1568452]Yeah, but a sucky ecosystem.
![]() I use amazon mp3 thats linked to my media monkey. That combo is a much better ecosystem and management than what itunes offers Last edited by boswd; 06-09-2011 at 11:57 AM. |

I have noticed that Hondas look like Niissans.
Clearly the only possible explanation is that Honda wants people to think that their products are Nissan products. Can I be a professional reviewer now? |

You make a good point, but thats not what I was talking about at all. I was riffing on the secondary market of cases, athletic gear that works with such gear, other software, etc... I don't buy music from Amazon or Apple unless it is, as it is in most cases, DRM free. |

What is this idea that Kindle users are Apple fans? I've read that in a few posts and... just no. I don't own a single Apple product, thanks. By choice.
And y'know what? I think the new Nook and the Kindle are similar, too. And I really like the new Nook. If I had any sort of money to do it, I'd even consider buying one and switching from Kindles. (I'm not sure if I WOULD, but I'd consider it.) So maybe there's something to B&N trying to draw in Kindle users. I absolutely HATED the Nook's navigation before, but now it's not too shabby. |
