This was how I grew up too. With sometimes a Sunday late afternoon 'Dinner' if the whole family was gathering.
Of course, Sunday night's meal was always at the local Chinese restaurant.

High Tea is waaaay different. It's even waaaay different in places that have High Tea! In some places it's tea served with finger sandwiches and in other places it's a normal luncheon. I have not attended any High Tea in the UK yet, but to be honest Turned out to be just an expensive experience of bad tea served with cookies is how I see it. It is more of a ceremony/tradition than enjoyment of a good quality tea, I think. They will steep a couple of Lipton tea bags in a very posh/posh looking? tea pot for you. I suspect that hotels, restaurants, cafés don't bother with steeping tea leaves. There is no demand*. Only specialised tea rooms/shops such as the ones I visited in Bath (Tea House Emporium), London (TeaSmith and hopefully in future The Chinese Tea Company), I know about one in Edinburgh that I will pay a visit if I am there, practice steeping good teas nowdays. They don't bother calling the ceremony High Tea though Probably don't want their names to be associated with bad reputation


* When in in Bath, the owner told us that people cannot comprehend how a tea, s simple tea can costs a lot of money. Coffee? Yes. Tea? No. It must be cheap. It is only tea for goodness sake!

It is sad that in the country that used to be famous for tea, people forgone such a delicious drink for the sake of others. I live in a small town, population approx. 80-90K and 160K county. There is not even one tea room in the area.

The one tea room in our area wouldn't allow children, so we couldn't go. Now I understand that maybe it is trying to cater for the grey haired brigade, but surely you would want to encourage kids to get into the tea habit if that's what you sell? Anyway, they have closed down now, so maybe their policy back-fired

After a lunch of green salad with goat cheese, toasted in the oven grill over half baguettes (whole rye for me), a slice of lox and a dollop of potato salad.

Girls had 2 glasses of a local red that takes well chilling, a glass of red grape juice (she calls it "drunken") and sparkling water for your Humble.

An afternoon of reading ahead of me. Outside, sheltered by the rain, but warm enough to justify shorts.

Girls go to a birthday party.

Just returned from a wonderful buffet dinner at a large Kyoto Hotel... They even had two chefs working to cook servings of Kobe steak. To say I made of pig of myself doesn't do justice to all the steak, roast beef, pork, and chicken, lobster tails, sashimi, prepared shellfish of 6 different sorts, tempuras, and a host of other delicacies.

And then they had to go and blow the whole gig by serving Lipton Yellow Label tea... Bummer, dood.

Well, as soon as I walked into the house I dropped a load of East India Company's Royal Breakfast tea into some hot water, waited a few minutes, and satisfied my tea cravings. Completion!

That is exactly what was done at Raffles! They even left the tea bags in the pot when they served it!

You cannot buy rye bread in the UK's supermarkets. I was told that one might find one type of rye bread in Waitrose. We don't have it in the town, so I cannot verify.
Polish shops have a small variety of rye bread but it is not 100% rye bread and it is brought from afar....
Brits don't know about it, don't like it and don't want to know about it
About two months ago we got a new stall at the local market once per week, McCarthy's Country Store and they have THREE types of 95% rye bread. I became their fan and dedicated customer.
One bread is 100% rye.
One bread is 95% rye + 5% pumpernickels (I am sure Germans know what it is , as probably all of the Europe, except the UK)
One bread 95% rye + 5% raisins (although it also has got caravan seeds, like some black bread we had in Ukraine, but I hate caravan seeds and my wife loves)
He has got another bread that is only 35% rye bread, I don't count it.


I wonder why such products as

Rye bread
Kefir
Curd cheese

that are available all over the Europe, not only Eastern Europe, but Western Europe, such as Germany, Netherlands, Austria, I think Italy too, but I am not sure. I don't remember whether I visited any supermarkets in Venice (too little time, too many pictures to take). It is a very healthy food known all over the world and unavailable over here? My brother, a doctor, who lives in Canada now, didn't want to believe me that I cannot buy rye bread.


A cup of Regent's Blend (Fortnum and Mason) went quite well with brunch Almost finished it (the tea). It has been my breakfast tea for the last 2 months.


Don't know which one to open next.

Royal Blend Tea - low-grown Flowery Pekoe from Ceylon lends an uplifting note to the maltier Assam
