Making big decisions after a big trauma is never a good way to go. Personally, I'd sit it out a while and rent and watch the market over a couple of months. Then like a gator watching all the game come to the water you can pick off the best critter while nicely rested and all brain cells firing. Some times we can make the easy choice rather than the right choice when we are tired of the waiting or get bad service.
Dixie, I agree with what Wannabee says. As the daughter and granddaugher of Realtors, I think this is too important of a decision to rush into. You may find good deals on houses right now but, if you decide the house or area isn't right for you, you may have a difficult time getting rid of it.

The top of my left foot has been hurting for days and now the inner side of my left knee is hurting, too. I have a Drs appt. I am pretty puffy in the feet but, for various health reasons, that is fairly typical of me, especially with the heat around here and what I have been eating (fast food, frozen dinners) and drinking lately (diet soda). Ugh.

I think that is some of the best advice you may have gotten thus far

I work on a military base. Today I went to the pass office to renew the stickers on my car that allow me to drive on base. It took 2 hours and 35 minutes. TWO HOURS AND THIRTY-FIVE FREAKING MINUTES TO GET SOME [moderator deletes his own expletive, but he's still thinking it] STICKERS FOR MY CAR!!! I don't do standing well. Walking is okay unless it's a long walk, but if I stand for any length of time, my lower back begins to complain, followed by major protests from my sciatic nerve. But there are no chairs in the pass office. Everyone waits in line, and by the time I got to the desk, my whole right side from my hip down felt like it was on fire. Normally, I don't use a cane, but I brought one because I knew what that crazy place was like. It helped some, but not enough, so a couple of times I said "Screw this" and sat down on my butt on the floor. I noticed there was a navy fireman there. I remarked that having him there was a good idea in case anyone passed out from the wait. I told them at the desk that even the DMV has a number system and chairs for their patrons. And, quite frankly, I can't recall the last time I spent over an hour at the DMV. This crazy shipyard. They keep hiring more and more contractors who take up more and more time at the pass office, yet they never hire more people to work at the pass office. The pass office employees aren't to blame; it's the system. It's the higher ups and the black-hearts who manage the budget. I guarantee that if a senator or congressman had to wait in one of their lines things would change. This is insane. And this is a normal day at the pass office.

On the plus side, I did finish one of the books I was reading on my Kindle, and made good progress on a couple of others.

At Pearl Harbor (Navy) they do (have a numbering system and chairs) as well as computer terminals set up to fill out the form and get your number before going to the window. They also have a separate line for contractors.

Schofield Barracks and Fort Shafter (Army), however, do not! And there it’s a zoo as you described.

The fellow at the window said he had raised the issue himself (I wasn't blaming him for the incompetence). The good news is that he told me that he was assured that when the new pass office is built, it will have a number system and chairs.

My stickers are good for another two years. If I'm not retired by then, maybe the next time won't be so bad.

BTW, Schofield Barracks is where I took basic training in the late 60s.

Comfortable chairs and a TV at Fort McPherson. Of course, they'll be closed as of 14 Sep 2011 -- the BRAC finally got us, which is why I retired. Maybe they'll send those chairs up there to you guys!

BRAC: What a great idea. Let's put all our eggs in one basket, and hope Pearl Harbor never happens again. Geeze!

I know. Ft Mac is a little jewel of a post -- lots of the buildings are on the historic registry. It's always been top-heavy with brass here, because of Third Army/First Army/FORSCOM. It baffles me that suddenly it is more cost efficient to MOVE all those major HQ.

Damn customer service people.....

Our one-year old vacuum cleaner broke down, but it's covered by a five year guarantee so we brought it back to the store... The customer service rep looked at the papers, took the machine, put a "RUSH-URGENT" tag on it, and said it should be back in two weeks.

Wonderful! I figured I had myself a two-week vacation from cleaning.

Then the damn woman sets a loaner vacuum on the counter ...

Damn customer service people...
