I found this photo series yesterday, and wanted to share it - the photos are fantastic, though the subject depressing:

Wow, definitely depressing, but I like the short captions of hope in those who protested and made a difference.

Very sad, but also interesting to note that their culture is actually much closer to the "normal" for most of human history than ours it. Adolescence is an artifact of Western industrial society (which is in no way defending the modern child-marriage cultures.)

For me, the very sad aspect is that those poor Countries, Nations, Cultures, by taking away the value of half of their population, keep themselves poorer than what they might, and make even grimmer their perspectives.

This happens in a world where traditional men attributes like pure physical strength are becoming irrelevant, leaving place to attributes that are shared by genders, like mental, character and spiritual ones.

I didn't expect to have such a visceral reaction when I looked at those pictures, because I love the National Geographic photo essays, and these pics are indeed beautiful. But the picture of the 14 year old girl bathing her newborn baby as her 2-year old daughter played nearby just hit me hard for some reason.

I'm not against child brides, per se. It's the forced aspect of it, that makes me angry. If two 16 year olds want to get married, let them. But when the age difference is huge and the girl is forced into the marriage, I'd say that is wrong. People are created equal, whatever some cultures may say (even our so-called modern western culture still thinks that the genders are different...).

But those girls that managed to get away, let's hope they'll give hope to the other child-brides-to-be and that they really will make a difference.
