The Touch does not have pan and zoom ability. If you want that, esp for comics, you probably want to look at a Nook Color.

No pan and zoom for PDFs? How disappointing! The NC stock reader had that to a certain extent, so I assumed this one would too.

It doesn't take much for me - if it's shiny and new and nobody else has one yet then I'm usually pretty giddy.

Really the main thing is the overall touch experience - especially how quick and easy it is to look up words in the dictionary (my biggest pet-peeve on the original). If someone could get an integrated Wikipedia lookup as well in a rooted Nook Touch, that would be killer... The Pearl screen is great to have finally (I was SO close to asking for a K3 for Christmas instead of the Nook Classic so I've always been jealous of those kindle owners).

Just looks great though - feels great. Looks like a perfect reader. Until the next shiny new one comes out...

I'm amazed at some of the BN stores out there - you can tell the Fargo store employs a ton of booklovers and readers because they are all over the new Nook as well. They had just gotten to the two display units and I had to pry it out of the hands of one of the employees...

I'm worried though - they are expecting their shipment today and they're not sure they're going to have enough to fill all of the pre-orders... (as you can tell, being blizzarded-in five months of the year, we have a lot of readers in this area).

Hoping to get the email this morning to get mine...

It is more difficult to implement zooming and panning on an eink screen than on LCD, because the refresh rate. It also requires more CPU processing for the rendering, which I believe is easier on tablets because a more powerful hardware under the hood.

Went to B&N yesterday and played for almost 30 min with one. Agree with almost everything. Fantastic piece of hardware and feels great! Great ergonomics and feels solid. But I did not find the dictionary lookup to be faster than Kindle or really fast. It is a two step action on the new Nook. On Kindle, you get a word's meaning, at least a short one, immediately after you position the cursor close to the word. But certainly can be more comfortable for some people.

The screen is also sharp and crips, same as Kindle 3. A big improvement if you had a Nook 1st generation, you will notice it at 1st eye.

For people looking for a new eink reader and if they don't read PDFs or technical books, I would recommend the new Nook without a blink of an eye. I think is even more value that the Sony, which is also touchscreen.

Hmmm. I've read many posts here previously saying that the Kindle 3's "Pearl" screen was NOT noticeably better than that of the nook. Never having personally seen a nook I can't judge for myself, but are you saying that the Pearl screen is in fact better?

Nice, me and a friend both pre-ordered and signed up for the free express shipping membership. Both shipped @ the same time and on the same truck(?). His shipped UPS ground, mine went UPS Surepost and both made it into town. His arrived this morning, while mine is at the post office waiting a couple days before it will be delivered. Nice job, B&B, nice job indeed.

Recieved my Nook Simple Touch yesterday via UPS! Love it so far. It is SOOOOO light in weight! My only problem so far is lack of a browser. The device should have this. Hopefully, they will add this in an update if enough people desire it.

Overall, well designed, and feels great in your hands. They have fixed the page advance buttons. Much better than the original. I returned two original units with the cracked button problem.

Very happy with unit so far.

You mean, than the 1st gen Nook Harry? It was. I remember having both at home on my hands (Nook and Kindle 3) after 1.4 firmware upgrade and Kindle 3 was way much better.

But Nook Touch looks crisp, clear, and really nice. It's using the "Pearl" screen.

I can't wait to get one. I love my PRS-300 and don't need another one but I don't think I'm going to be able to resist upgrading to a Nook touch.

To be fair, I think JoCampo has always stated that he liked the K3's screen better than the first gen Nook.

Myself and a few others, we really couldn't tell all that much of a difference. I didn't think that the K3's screen was superior to the Nook's after the update, and I stand by that. I haven't seen the N2's screen yet so I haven't been able to compare, but if it's anything like the K3, it's not worth upgrading to.

Well, it's a matter of hardware. The Nook 1st gen has an inferior screen and contrast than Kindle 3 or Sony, and that cannot be improved via software. The same company who makes the screen recognizes on a public report.

Regardless, if you own a Nook 1st gen and compare to a Nook Touch, the change is very noticeable and for better now.

I agree I brought mine into Best Buy to compare with the kindle after the nooks v1.5 update and while yes I will admit if you had to choose one that was a better contrast it was the pearl screen, but it was in no way anything dramatic. Def. not to the level some people on this forum will have you believe. You didn't go "WOW" that is soo much better. The nook's original screen without a doubt held its own after the update.

I think it just became engrained in many people to hear Pearl Screen and automatically think " Amazingly better" .

but the nook added it on. If anything it just takes that issue of the table.
