Here's my list of requirements, help me pick a reader...

eInk screen (preferrably perl, but doesn't have to be)
ePub
Browsing by folders
Some type of memory card

Which readers fit the bill?

The jetBook and jetBook Lite use the reflective TFT screen, which those of us who have one think is better than eInk.

Other than that, both of them meet your requirements.

Newegg currently has the JBL with a free earlight for $89.99.

The text of the reflective TFT screen is as black as can be. Solid black. That's most important to me.

Also, the page-turning is instantaneous.

Morgan, the term "e-paper" is widely used, and doesn't mean anything in a helpful manner.

Although the reflective TFT screen is technically an LCD, most people think of an LCD screen as one that is backlit, with the problems that that entails. The reflective TFT screen is not backlit. Like an eInk screen, if there is no light in the room, you can't see it.

Is it as easy to read outdoors as e Ink?

Interesting
1. How is the battery life?
2. Is there a high gloss to the surface (specular reflections and glare)
3. Do you happen to know who carries these so I could see one in person?

Easier to read outdoors than eInk because the text is blacker. But a few people have needed to return their JBLs for replacement because their text jittered outdoors.

JBL rechargeable nickel metal batteries get 24-25 hours of reading time or 18 days, whichever comes first.

No reflection or glare.

I've never seen one in a store. But I'm pretty sure that Newegg has a return policy if you don't like it.

I know the Sony Reader PRS-650 can be hacked using a modified firmware and PRS+ to add in folder support. It supports ePub via ADE and has a Pearl screen.

Yes, Jon. I believe that the eInk Pearl screen would not be as popular as it is here if more people would have the opportunity to see the JBL's reflective TFT screen. That is because the TFT text is so much blacker.

The black on the Pearl screen is truly black. That's the major improvement over the older screens.

I was thinking the same thing, though I no longer have easy access to a reflection densitometer to objectively compare them.

I'm wondering if the TFT looks blacker to some because the background is whiter, or the font is heavier perhaps? I am curious to see it in person in any case.
