on the FS page you can see the mention "Estimated release date: 06/24/2011".
I hope there will be some demo in Indigo before that. My wife goes to NYC around the 10th so it might Nook for me...

You can only find the "Pearl" (White) one at Indigo, and the Blue one at Best Buy / Futureshop.

...I hope that they come a color other than white, as white will be VERY bright outside on sunny days... [EDIT] Ok found later in the thread(w/o reading linked articles yet), that there are wisely other colors... so black it is for me, which is what I should've gotten my 505 in... [/EDIT]

Just wishing that I'd held off on the WiFi now, but my PRS-505's battery is going, and yes I have silver on this one which IS bright as well in sunlight, plus Sony has that irritating habit of putting chromish plastic on everything which does a PERFECT job of acting like a mirror and reflecting sunlight. This has a crapload of buttons, but I don't notice them and THEY are useful when it comes to things like entering a page number, etc. esp. given the finnickiness of the Kobo's D-pad.

I hope that the touch controls are user customizable, esp. the page turn functionality as what irritated me the most with the WiFi was the poor positioning of the D-pad. I hold my readers in my left hand and also operate page turns with my left thumb on ALL of my prior devices excepting the kobo which forces me to use my right hand.

Speed seems to be decent esp. for a slightly complex PDF which was dreadfully ssssslllllloooowwwww on my PRS-505. So slow, that I haven't even bothered trying one on the Kobo WiFi even though it has a bit faster CPU. (Simple text PDFs were usually fine though...)

I hope that the dictionary is actually useful outside of kepubs, and that plurals work(?!). I had been wanting a pearl eink device, but the Sony readers were still high(v. EVERY other reader), didn't like the keyboard on the Kindle(but started thinking about one) but the WiFi screen seemed to be about as good as my 505 in the store and since it was $99 I decided just to go with that. BTW my PRS-505 batt life was MUCH greater than the Kobo WiFi's(wifi OFF) when it was new. I think that they should've gone with a bit more weight for a higher cap batt in the Kobos.

I'm still wishing that they'd at least put a basic web browser in the WiFi enabled Kobos as while it won't be GREATLY useful, it'd be nice to have on occasion.

New Nook: As to batt length I always get a lulz when they days/week/months, then I go look somewhere that has some useful metric like say page turns/full charge which BTW B&N claim are > Nook 3.

I'm only up to page 5 of this thread as I haven't had time to look into the Kobo touch until today.

let me add my 2 cents.
I received a reply from the kobo team. At least some of you will get the satisfation to know that the dictionary works with epub as well.

Quote:
To let you know the answer to your questions; the dictionary will work for both kepubs and epubs. Yes currently there is the three sections that you described, on the new Kobo touch however we have another list which where you can select your favorite books, we also have a search function for your library. The footnotes support is something we are beginning to introduce, the footnotes are being supported on our ipad/iphone app and it is something that is being looked at.

Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

I am happy to hear that the dictionary function will work with ePubs. I am very disappointed that the footnote/links support is not built in yet as this would be very helpful especially with a touchscreen. I am glad they are looking at implementing it and I hope it is done soon. Everything else looks pretty great right now. I will have to see how I like the touchscreen functionality of turning pages, and I hope there are some performance improvements to bring it closer to what the Nook Touch seems to be capable of.

The dictionary support is good news! I was reading a review that said the new nook screen is not better then the K3's screen. So I am waiting pitently to find out if the Kobo's pearl is as good as my K3 before buying. I do know E-Ink quality screens can vary so I am just waiting for some hands on reviews but I am still leaning toward the Kobo Touch. I just hope it's quickly released in the U.S.

I'm leery of buying anything from Borders but Walmart or Best Buy I have no problems with.

I'm not really sure there's a real difference in the screen. The sensors are on the borders and not under the screen (correct me if I'm wrong) so it's just another pearl display.
What will make a difference will be the feeling and of course the UI. I'm afraid it will be too minimalistic :|

Thanks both of you! I notice, too, the FS/BB pre-order pages say estimated date is 15 June (for arrival in their warehouses).

It's a pity the Blue one is exclusive in Canada to FS/BB only because I'd prefer to buy the unit at Chapters Indigo because I beleive I'll get better after sales service if needed and I'd rather the full retail price "stays in the family".

But, there it is.

In the review from PCWorld the person had the Nook Touch and K3 side by side and said The Nook's text is not as crisp or dark as on Amazon's Kindle 3. So that concerns me because they suppose to have same screen but I guess font rendering could be to blame here.
I plan to take my Kindle to B&N when I test drive. That will be fun but for Kobo Touch I will have to rely on people's pics and reviews here. I don't have anywhere local that will have it. My Walmart doesn't carry any ereaders and if they do get them in they will be locked away in a glass case with chains and alarms.

I have to say on this picture, you can see a "real" difference, it might be the light though...

contrast doesn't seem to be very good on the kobo at all, but at least we know it MUST be their firmware as the screens themselves should be identical coming from the same mfg and all...

Kobo Touch and Subscriptions

I wonder how the UI will be for newspapers and other subscriptions? One thing I would love to see is a quick means of skipping to the next article in the paper.

Currently the approach I use is to start reading an article. If I find I am not interested, I hit the center of the D-pad, and either move to the "Next Article" selection and hit the D-pad again, or if I am already on that option, just hit the D-pad.

I suppose ideally I'd like to be able to swipe up or down to page through an article, and left or right to switch to the next article.
