If the book your interested in shows a percentage discount in its price at Kobo then you're good to go on using a coupon (I kind of look at this as coupon compatible labeling). If it doesn't then chances are it's an agency book so no discount is allowed.

Ah, very clever! I hadn't browsed the Kobo catalog enough to put that together. Thank you!!

Is that really reliable? I could be mistaken, but I had thought I noticed that while looking for stuff to use the recent $2 coupon on, and thought I immediately proved myself wrong.

However, I think the point is that Nook owners can buy from other vendors, even those who use DRM (except from Amazon). Kindle owners are more restricted, I believe, and can mostly only buy from Amazon.
You cannot buy eBooks from Apple for anything other then iBooks running on iOS 4.x.

Amazon cannot buy from any other shop if you are talking with DRM. Without DRM, any Mobipocket eBooks will do.

I don't know if it's 100% or not. I've purchased a ton of books (over 100) with their coupons and it's always been an accurate indicator for me.

Certainly little reason when talking about B&N, Google Books or Sony.

I think our more legitimate disagreement might boil down to:
"Kobo or Amazon...who has the more of the best deals?"

That might make an interesting thread poll.

p.s. And of course, buying from any non-integrated store, even in the ADEPT world, usually invoves SOME additional hoops...can't buy from the device, etc. Yes, one or two additional and more significant (ethically and/or legally speaking) hoops on the Kindle side, no argument.
I agree with you for the most part, when all things equal I don't leave my nook ecosystem, but when I get great coupons from Kobo books, you bet your bippy I'm shopping there

(And he's cheaper in paperback than ebook?! I hate that. I like King, and I appreciate the value of ebooks, I really do, but that just seems wrong to me.)
950, new nook and new Kobo all have wireless integration to their stores. So I see the Kindle's experience as being nothing special these days. Others are doing the same thing just as well.

If you were an average person who did not know how to strip DRM and/or convert eBooks, then yes, your Amazon purchased with DRM eBooks would have you locked to the Kindle unless you didn't mind giving them up.

This is more true then there are people who can strip & convert.

If an indie author wants me to buy his/her eBook, the it had better be published someplace other then Amazon and Smashwords and in ePub.

I say Smashwords, because I don't buy from there because I hate their meatgrinder.

Amazon also includes public domain eBooks in their numbers and in fact, multiple copies too. So the because of this, Amazon's numbers do get inflated even more so.

Whispersync is an all or nothing deal. It is either on or it's off. You cannot turn it off for certain books/devices. So if your spouse decides to read the same book you are, you'll get no ends of hassle when your last read pages changes on you.

Point was on ANY of those devices, you'd need a compelling reason to shop at other than the integrated store, and there does not often seem to be one.

No, you could read them on any device that had a Kindle app, and also in so far as you may not be able to read some of your books on certain other devices, the same would be true for your Apple bought books, and your B&N-proprietary DRM books, too. So there is no big issue here. It's not a lock-in, it's some incompatibility that is not unique to Amazon. Would be nice if everything worked everywhere, but certainly not the issue some make it out to be.

Plus, since you are speaking of this supposed "average user" who can't do so much stuff, what are they doing buying multiple readers? Sounds like a hobbyist to me.....

Ha! That didn't occur to me. I never ran into that between my wife and me, but it would have had me scratching my head.
