My library is empty, so there's nothing to transfer; and I don't even have an account with Kobo. Looks like neither store had anything to interest me.

Thank you! I looked around yesterday and couldn't figure how to do it

I wonder how long it will be before the Readers themselves will be available for purchase from Kobo's online store?

I am really surprised you can't order directly from Kobo. You figure it would be natural to at least allow orders.

Now I have to find a new place to buy books. Kobo is great and all but with the fees tacked on for currency transfer and the inability to buy more than one book at a time...

This. I wish there was at least a heads up before the move. I'm really disappointed that this happened especially since I brought Borders Rewards + specifically for buying ebooks and was going to spend my Border Bucks on an e-book that I got as a PDF and there was finally a EPUB release for it (unless kobobooks can prevent me having to buy the book full price twice but I doubt it). Plus the features really has nothing for me to be happy about since I don't use apps since I have Calibre and ADE and I only read with my e-reader.

Seriously, a bad move. I can't see how most Borders customers won't be upset about this. Luckily I don't have a foreign currency fee to pay.

In the past, we had to build our Kobo branded apps, and then build a separate set of apps that were Borders branded. This was very confusing, and also meant that the Borders apps didn't always get the features as fast as they could (like our awesome Reading Life on the iPad, iPhone and Android).

By moving their eBooks to Kobo, people get the full benefit of Kobo's catalog, top rated apps, and service.

We've put a number of articles on our help site with more information about moving your eBooks from Borders to Kobo. It should answer any questions you might have:

http://kobo.zendesk.com/categories/2...orders-related
So is Kobo accepting Borders gift cards? I have some credit in Borders gift cards that I want to be able to use for eBooks. Also, will I be charged transaction fees for buying from Kobo since I live in the USA? If I cannot use my Borders gift cards and I will be charged a fee, I won't be buying from Kobo.

Kobo doesn't have a "foreign currency fee". This is a bogus complaint and has been hashed out on several threads.

Some credit cards charge such fees which have been reported as 5¢ per transaction. Complain to your credit card company if this is a concern and also weigh the "impediment" your credit card's 5¢ fee is vs. savings or convenience of buying at kobobooks.com.

Are you sure of this? Last time I bought an eBook, I was charged a transaction fee. I thought it was Kobo charging the fee.

I buy Kobo books from two cards; one is a local (not US) debit card and I'm charged fees but these are my bank fees (they charge 2% on every non-local, online purchase), and the other is a US credit card and there are no fees attached because my bank does not charge transaction fees on this card. Based on this, I'm assuming that if any fees are charged, it would be the bank charging them, not Kobo.

Something curious I've noticed - sometimes when I order books with my US card I'm charged the list price; when I order with my local card, I'm charged Kobo's price (the 'Our price'). Because I have 2 Kobo accounts (one for each card), when I notice this, I just log out of one account and log into the other so I can get the cheaper price. I've always wondered what's this about ...

A way to avoid those foreign transaction fees with Kobo is to use gift cards. I get charged 2% on each purchase from Kobo. It can really add up. So I just buy a gift card and use that instead. I do get charged 2% on the gift card purchase but it cheaper then per purchase charge of just using a credit card when I want something.

You buy $25 worth of eBooks and get charged 2%.
You buy a $25 gift card and get charged 2%.

Same difference.
