Close enough! India passed the Wildlife Protection Act in 1972 to prevent the export of snakeskins. This law was then extended to ban ownership of serpents as well, so that snake charming is now illegal. There are still performers, but they must pay huge bribes to officials to allow their performances, making it no longer a profitable trade.

I presume you mean the only US soldier. There were many from Britain, and several from New Zealand, executed for supposed desertion in WWI.

If I remember correctly, there was even a movie made about him too! I guess there is a big problem proving 'intent to desert.' We were told that if we did decide the military wasn't for us, to be sure NOT to leave our dog tags behind as that would be considered proof. If we took them with us, we could always say we were just taking some extra holiday time, and planned on returning... some day.

One of my WWI reference books details the cases of the five Kiwis known to have been executed in WWI. It makes for some shocking reading (especially the case of a boy who put his age up to enlist, and then just found it all too horrible to bear). The Aussies refused to execute any of their soldiers; a refusal that annoyed General Haig no end.

Correct! Took another ex-soldier to know that one, I guess. Slovak was the only U.S. soldier to be executed for desertion in WWII (Jan 31 1945). The first to receive this penalty in 80 years.
