What's the other (secret) reason you bought your ereader?

OK, if it's truly confidential, you're not going to post here. In my case... The excuse. 1. Intellectual: Out of the reading habit. Want to read more, maybe this novelty will help. The reason. 1. Practical: Lonely Planet West Africa guidebook too heavy for train travel. Adding *East* Africa too and it's impossible. The real reason 2. Emotional: Six months of 5 hours a day caring for the person in my life who is dearest to me, taking a break from his dying to do something indulgent, unnecessary, expensive, and time-consuming - for me. The real reason behind the real reason 3. Spiritual: Can't stand clutter or anything superfluous. While I like the results and activity of reading I really can stomach the presence of a shelf of books. Don't really know why. It's an angst about undigested books. Feel I should select and memorize one great 'book' in the pre-medieval oral tradition or totally understand one book before I move on to a second. On my deathbed will having read many books really matter? Yours might be (seriously or jokingly)... a. impress strangers on the bus who are still using 14th century technology. b. vengence for brother who runs antiquarian bookstore, gift for his son c. impress girlfriend who thinks I am Neanderthal. Just need to fill up my ereader with over 100 titles and do some page turns to make them look read. Or? Of course you might have bought an ereader for some strange and some very rational reasons both. Last edited by hermes; 05-31-2011 at 06:19 AM. |

it's not really a secret, but i bought an ereader due to space constraints and the fact that people won't be judging me by the cover of the book i read. i also like to read because i usually prefer to be in another world other than this one |

It's a gadget. Do I need more reasons? My original reason to buy an electronic device on which I could read, was because it's much more handy to read on a 3.5" screen than a large 10" hardcover book in the train. |

I love having access to hundreds of books on one little gizmo! My sensible reasons were all to do with convenience:

So as not to be tied to a computer to read all the books I've liberated/format shifted/copyright infringed/stolen* over the years. *Delete or add terms according to taste. |

Simple. Instant gratification. I grew tired of ordering real (meaning physical) books (no quality bookstores near me) and waiting on them to arrive. Now I can research, browse, select and buy in one minute... and start reading my selection the next minute.

I bought an ereader because I was running out of room to store my books.

The excuse Later this year I'm going on a month-long bicycle tour, and packing enough books to keep me busy in the evenings seemed impractical to say the least, so I bought a Kindle with 3G so I could bring as many books with me as I wanted to, and if I had the urge I could buy some more or do some very basic websurfing, like looking up stuff I encounter on Wikipedia. The reason The excuse really is a big part of the reason, but also the fact that it's a gadget. I love gadgets, but I generally don't buy them unless I have a reasonably valid excuse. The real reason The above two pretty much sums it up. Last edited by Astrakan; 05-31-2011 at 08:29 AM. |

I love to read, I ran out of space years ago for DTB. Being able to increase the font on my reader, makes it easier for me to read comfortably.

I don't have a secret reason. I bought an ereader to get free books. When I read DTB's, I had to pay for them. With ebooks, I no longer have to pay for them.

			1. I bought my ereader because I live in a small 2 bedroom apartment with 2 adults and 2 - 4 kids and there's just no room for books. I don't even have a book shelf. The books I have kept over the years are in a rubbermaid bin. 2. I love gadgets 3. I don't have to drive to the book store everytime I finish a book anymore. 4. I can carry as many books as I want so I can re-read something if I've finished a book and don't have wi-fi/computer handy. |

I like gadgets and I like reading. Putting those two together is like having my cake and eating it, too.

What secret reason? I bought an e-reader to read slashy fanfic on the commuter train. Access to professionally-published literature was a nice bonus, but not relevant to the decision.
