Now how long have people been asking B&N to implement landscape in the Nook? and how long has B&N ignored those requests? and how long will it be before those making these requests realize that B&N just doesn't care?

You are right on that and it is a real shame. On my particular case, Amazon bookstore and selection was another factor in choosing a Kindle over Nook, not just the device, but the new Nook touch could catch even more customers with simple changes like landscape mode. Didn't Amazon just do a test run to see if they could expand the market of their ereaders beyond the casual reader? I seem to recall something about them giving university students a DX model and running an experiment to see if students could study using only their ereader. That experiment failed. Some students struggled with trying to study on the Kindle DX, while others (not willing to sacrifice their GPA for an experiment) gave up and snuck in real text books to study. IMO, some things are easier to read with paper books. If I'm studying and trying to absorb information, I want a paper book. I want to be able to flip and turn back and forth quickly. I need to spread text books and notes all around me (the dining room table is great for this!) to absorb information. I don't know why that is, I only know that it is. For casual reading I reach for my Kobo every time (which I love!) Obviously I'm not the only one who feels this way or Amazon would be trumpeting the success of their Kindles-for-university-students experiment. And I daresay other ereaders would have adopted some of those strategies to capture the academic market. |

If every single person bought 10 novels and one technical book, B&N and Amazon would still show the novels as being more popular buy a factor of ten, and every single person would still read technical books. That alone proves nothing. For example, I read novels a lot more than technical books, but I still occasionally use the landscape mode on the Kindle to good effect. (Even with some novels, that include maps or charts or specially formatted passages).

In addition, what will happen when the digital book market levels off? These companies and/or divisions will need to be profitable soon while we're experiencing rapid growth. I'm not positive they can afford to introduce new ereaders every 12-18 months. I too would like to see 4 or more platforms worldwide. Who has a strong or weak hand I don't know. Companies with a lot of cash and/or higher net incomes will fair better (and still be around) a year or two from now.

The simple truth is that the data is there, it is just held in secret by the ereader manufacturers. I propose we lobby congress to enact legislation to set our ereading statistical usage data free as the air, for all to pore over. For no other reason than to enlighten these discussions ever more.

Proof that people most read novels on their readers? http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/digital-text http://www.barnesandnoble.com/ebooks/bestsellers.asp http://kobobooks.com/top50.html Oh wait, I'm sure ALL of these companies are actually selling tons of poetry books and technical manuals, and keeping it a secret. eP |
