I love learning new o/s's And I've been very very pleased with Windows 7, but now I'm starting to get a bit bored with it and want Windows 8 (or whatever they're going to call it). In the meantime, I'm playing with Mac. I will also admit to hating Vista.
However, in one realm, I'm sure I'm in a minority - I like my eye candy. As long as it doesn't slow my machine down, anyway, I like things to be customizable and look good. (Poor Kovid knows this to his great sorrow and probably exasperation, LOL). I also love finding my way around new software releases. If I wasn't so afraid of messing up my school installation of Office ,I'd have installed the beta of Office 2010 the second it came out. I'm also very impatiently waiting on new editions of some of my favorite graphics software.

Networking is easier too. You can only use the fancy new Homegroup networking with other Win7 computers, but you can still do normal folder shares and such with all the usual permissions, and it takes about 1/5th of the time to set the permissions that it took in previous Win versions. Another bonus is that I can access my shared folder from my roommate's Mac - I could never get my XP or Vista machines to show up, and we swap music tracks because we collaborate on recordings.

The Vista sidebar dashboard thingie has been set free - you can now put the widgets anywhere on the screen. I have a nice weather gadget that I found in the online gallery. With the increased memory efficiency, you can actually afford to run some of those without slowing down the whole works.
Thanks for the update. I like the sound of the networking improvement, which always seems to cause problems in my house - either someone can't connect, or the shares won't work, and mainly we keep having network print problems, so if Win7 can help sort that, it's a define plus .

Is your printer a network printer or a printer attached to a print server? I ask because I've got an HP network printer (on ethernet) that works great from all the computers. I have not tried the Win7 computer with my wireless print server yet because the HP rendered it redundant, but I'm thinking about putting my inkjet on that and seeing how well it works.

(By the way, I highly recommend the HP business-level laser multi-function printers. We got ours for $150 on sale direct from HP, it's a true workhorse and their tech support is awesome.)

Today's rant: I have a headache.

It's directly attached to my desktop, and the 4 laptops dotted around the house connect to the wireless network. I did have an HP Office Jet multi-function printer, which was great while it worked, but it's finally given up the ghost, and I now have a Kodak ESP7, because of the cheap(er) cartridge costs. I can get it working from one laptop (XP), but none of the others (Vista), so I guess it's something to do with that. I will sort it out sometime when I have the energy....

That's the point where most fail (with Windows it's even an epic fail.)
You might like what KDE is becoming... they turn more and more eyecandyish.

IMO the only eyecandy a computer needs is the userette in front of it
chris my share my opinion

HP printers: yeah driver- and quality-wise really a charm - on Linux too - but they aren't cheap eaters indeed.

On Tuesday I ordered a custom case and an eLuminator light for my new Kindle at M-Edge. To my surprise the light was sent the same day and it should have arrived yesterday but it arrived at the Dutch depot after the courier had already left. This can happen. So today I keep an eye on the tracking page and at 11.12am it left the depot to be delivered.

At 8.15pm I get an email the status has changed to delivered. According to the website it was delivered at 10.53am at a reception and signed by Kooten. We live above our store, which was open at 10am but we haven't got a reception and I don't know anyone named Kooten. My father didn't receive any packages for me. I also find it very interesting that FedEx can travel back in time to deliver packages.

Emailed both FedEx and M-Edge. I'm not expecting much from FedEx but M-Edge already mailed back and asked me to check a couple of things, which I did. Hopefully they can help.

The problem is our street is very long, and interrupted by other streets only to continue on again after those. It's lined with shops and businesses and it could have been delivered at any of them and signed by an employee called Kooten.

I'm rather peed off at the moment, mostly because delivery of packages goes wrong so often.

Sorry to hear about that, I hope you find it. It should be up to FedEx to prove they delivered it to the right place not for you to prove you didn't get it.

True, but one also has to factor in that some manufacturers with less-expensive toner cartridges require separate drum replacement every so often at a cost that can be quite high. The HPs probably are somewhere in the middle when it comes to overall cost of use.

Rant: While my headache is gone, the sunshine is gone also. I've got all my work done for the day but my plan to enjoy the weather in the backyard doesn't seem so wonderful now.

Tomorrow I'm going to check the museum two doors down (only one nearby with a front desk/receptionist) and number 186 (we live at 168). M-Edge already contacted FedEx and if it doesn't turn up by Tuesday they'll send a new one. They asked for an alternative address so I asked friends who live outside the inner city if it's okay to have it delivered at their place.

I also asked if it could be send together with the custom case I ordered but that has already been sent. That should arrive on Tuesday, fingers crossed that'll arrive okay!

Luckily the Kindle 3 got such a clear screen I can even read in dim light without a problem so I won't be needing the light right away.

Well, I got my Sansa today and I am having no luck with it. Dropping and dragging didn't appear to work for getting music on it from my iTunes. Then what I could get in Windows Media was taking forever to sync, then it froze on "Writing" and I had to reset it.

I had a very helpful rep. on the Sansa live chat and was getting places. It seems I have to convert my MP4s to MP3s. That is fine except I don't know which are which and am getting duplicates and now the device is not showing up in my computer or Windows Media. I have been fooling with this thing for three hours. And the chat is closed for the evening.

Well, restarting the computer seems to have fixed the not showing up issue. The thing is still taking forever to either drop n drag or synce to get content on it.

Hideous weekend with migraines (too much stormy weather/pressure fronts moving through, etc.) Woken up this morning at 2 am by solid bar of pain extending from base of neck to rear of eyeballs. Took meds. Took 2 hours to lose pain & get back to sleep.

Woken up at 8 am by cat screaming outside bedroom door claiming imminent starvation. Fed cats, took more meds. Planning on locking cat in dryer tonight at bedtime [just kidding - but wonderful mental image] - shared thoughts with cat.

Trying out new pain med from doctor (a barbiturate) - effective against pain but I end up falling asleep, then staggering around house like toddler learning how to walk, bouncing off door jambs.

Now reading depressing Seamus Heaney poetry about dead bodies found preserved in bogs.

Not having a particularly fun holiday weekend.

Thank you for reading - just had to share with someone that didn't have fur.

Going off to read thread with funny signs for a laugh.

I wish donuts and coffee could kill your migraine. I would trebuchet a dozen hot glazed Krispy Kremes to you. Feel better soon!
