Well, hunker down, my friend. And when you've done that be sure to tell us what a hatch is and how and why one must batten them down.

Apparently, the big thing in home improvement around here are hurricane windows. The guy explained that it is like windshield glass, encased in plastic, hard to break, and reportedly cuts down on AC. Do you guys have that in Japan?

As near as I can figure, a 'hatch' is the birth of a whole bunch of bugs, like Mayflies. When you 'batten them down' you are using a Louisville Slugger baseball bat to eliminate them. I still never figured out why they are born just before storms. Hope this help clear things up.

Are you kidding? We still have paper walls! In fact, I have to get over to the DIY shop and pick up some repair stuff; paper and glue. I stumbled the other day and put my fingers through the shoji in the living room. As for glass windows, I really haven't paid much attention to what is available, other than for earthquake damage prevention; stuff to keep furniture from moving around, etc.

This storm has just been downgraded to a Tropical Storm. It should be even milder by the time it reaches us. Probably nothing more than a heavy rain storm. We got lucky this time.

We had both hatches and battens on our boat, but trying to one with the other just before a storm always seemed a waste of time.

Yes, perfectly. I now understand why Captain Whatshisname kept yelling to Mr. Christian to batten down the hatches. Does this mean that baseball was invented by the crew of HMS Bounty? So many questions, so little time.

No, baseball was invented by Sir Walter Raleigh as a method in which to help spread the use of chewing tobacco. (Very few Bic lighters in those days which made smoking the stuff difficult.) The crew of the HMS Bounty discovered Easter. They even named an island after it.

Managed to mow the lawn tonight. Pleasantly cool but VERY humid! Huge warm-up on the way - temps going to approach 100 F!

Started out sunny but a little cool. I went to the parents to cut tree branches and trim bushes. By the time I had them cut in pieces and ready for the yard can, the clouds opened up and it poured rain. I figured I was already dirty I might as well be wet as I finished getting them in the can. It poured rain!

Home now and curled up after a hot shower. Doing laundry now and trying to figure out what to do for dinner.
