NOOK Touch = Black and White, Dumbed Down iPad

Already there are iPad comparisons. What the heck? Everything is compared to the iPad. It's nauseating. I'm tired of the ignorant statements from people who just can't comprehend why one would choose to use eink devices in addition to other tech gadgets.

I also saw somewhere a reference to the NOOK Touch being targeted to grandmas.

What do you expect from the "digital generation"? They wouldn't know what a printed book was if it crawled up their backsides and called them momma.

The "digital generation" doesn't even know how to socialize face to face in person. They sit in the same darn room a few feet apart and exchange SMS! I'm not sure what they would do during a prolonged power and/or cellular outage. Suicide?

All in fun!

No need to blame the digital generation for iPad comparisons; we all know that's the media at work, talking down to the consumers who, they are sure, haven't heard of any other digital device on the market except the iPad.

Shows what they know: They should be comparing it to the Kindle, if anything.

But, but, but, you can't compare it to the Kindle! It's got no buttons!

The sad fact is that most tech writers are neither technical nor writers. They generally fall into three types: those who regurgitate press releases, those who just wave the flag for their (or their employer's) chosen company, and those who simply can't conceive of anyone who doesn't match their own personal needs or preferences.

It's a ridiculous comparison, of course. Consumers appear to understand this better than journalists.

I find these comparisons with the iPad nauseating too. I also get tired of similar articles about smartphones taking over the ereader market. Not everything has to be a multi-functional device! Dedicated devices definitely serve a purpose when they offer more features tailored to a specific experience that might be over-generalized on a multi-functional device. That's why it's great to have consumer choices so people can buy what meets their needs. Not every new product has to be the next big "killer" as the media hype would lead you to believe.

These are the same people who proudly put in their social networking profiles that they don't read, reading is dumb, etc. I wouldn't put too much stock into it.

I'm surprised no one has suggested this yet...

Can the moderators create a "Touch" prefix? (Like the current "Color" and "Classic" ones)

Thanks!

This is the media try at "dumbing down" the audience. The think that the only piece of electronic gear that anyone has ever heard of is made by Apple. I think there should be a 4th category that these so-called tech writers fall into - just plain silly. (I would have used the other "s" word, but my mother told me never to call someone stupid. OOPS!)

It seems that so many people want to blame "the media" for everything as though they were Evil, Inc. I personally think the media is simply ignorant, and ill informed, and not evil as a general rule. I see the problem not as the media's fault but as the collective fault of those who listen to the media--the public. If the public is very intelligent and thoughtful, the media must be also or the public will totally reject them. If the public is more inclined toward reading comic books, texting instead of meeting someone, watching videos, surfing the internet instead of working, then the media has to come down to their level. I therefore see a direct correlation between the intellegence level of the public and the media, and thus an indictment against the media is an indictment against the public. But wow will I get flamed for this bit of truth. After all the public always wants to blame everyone else for its problems but itself!

In summation, we the public have dumbed down the media, not the other way around.

When the very first nook came out, everyone was comparing it to the iPad. It was frustrating. We'd try to explain that they are apples and oranges, nook was more like the kindle, which somewhat worked. I think some people just throw technical words out and hope for the best sometimes. :P

They can't compare the iPad to the Kindle as it's not about iOS vs. Linux. It's iOS vs. Android and as the nook has Android, it's iPad vs. nook.

The problem with a lot of these multifunction devices such as cell phones is that they eat battery life like crazy. You use 3G or 4G to surf the net and then find you can't make a call as you're battery is flat. To be honest, I got a lot better battery life on my old Sanyo do nothing special because it was a phone then I get on my do it all iPhone 3G.
