But honestly... when was the last time that you didn't have access to an electric outlet for more than week (or had your e-reader's battery die at an inopportune time)? A week will suffice until forever can be be achieved.
I understand your "1, 2, 3...many" point, but for me, that point is over two weeks. The less I have to remember to do each week, the happier I am.
I'd prefer my Kindle lasted even longer, but it is at least past my 'long enough' point if I keep wifi off most of the time.

My cell phone just annoys me regularly, and I'm on my second battery.

Ah, but I would need a charger with me, and I already need to take the charger for my phone and the battery charger for my camera, and one on top of the other, the weight and volume become impractical, and I might decide that it is easier to just buy some paper books and be done with it.

I hear ya, here we are having pissing contest over x amount of weeks WEEKS for a battery charge.

Cell phone makers, give us something that can last DAYS!!!!! I stream any video or music and there goes my battery. When not streaming etc. I can get 1.5 days out of mine, and that is considered solid in todays world.

That's a shame. That's why the orig nook's battery life never once bothered me. Once a week I charge it up. I have no idea what all the complaining was about.

Thankfully USB charging is getting more and more common. Most of what I need to charge now uses just the same USB charger, with a 99 cent mini/micro adapter on the end.

You know, I think it's psychological. Our phones, iPods, computers, are all tech devices, and we EXPECT them to need power regularly. Most of us are old enough to be grateful that we are not constantly tethered to a wall plug any more.

But our ereaders are our books! We toss books in our packs and bags and expect them to be usable when we want them.
We don't expect to have to charge our books.

Hey, I use my phone only for calls (very few), text messages and my daily alarm clock, so my battery usually lasts a week.

I should get one of those, but right now I just use the manufacturer supplied charger.

My old Samsung Clamshell could get me a good six days. That was great little phone.

Yeah, loving the standardized micro-usb chargers. My cell phone charger works for both my Kindle3g and my Sony350.
Oddly, the cell phone refuses to charge from anything else, and of course, it needs charged daily.

The Kindle and Sony battery lives are so long, I don't care if they get any longer.

I can give one stat on Kindle's battery life though: Full to nearly warning-low-level after 13 hours on TTS @ medium speed changing pages @ text size medium +1, under a pillow.

(I learned this night before last when I fell asleep listening to Abercrombie's "Last Argument of Kings". I let TTS read me to sleep every night, but usually I wake up just enough to press the space bar to stop it within the first hour.

That night, I crashed so hard, I just dislodged the earplug, so I slept through it as it ran almost to the end of the book. - about 700 pages. )

On the practical side I'm totally with Diap; if the batterys last more than a month, i don't care if one can last 1 week more...

Now, regarding the OP and the rest:
Of course the idle state consumes battery; if it wasn't the case, you could full charge your Kindle and turn it on 1 year later with full charge (which wouldn't happen); there are many ways in which a powered device can loose power/energy.
Specially, a lot have to do with electronic components (magnetic fields and etc)

Absolutely. Just having the operating system running uses noticeable amounts of electricity. If that weren't the case, there wouldn't be any point in the devices going into standby after a few minutes of not being used.

Its not just that. A lot of today's devices after being "turned off" still consume energy, mostly the ones connected to the wall plugs. (Fridge, computers, all kind of device chargers, etc...).

IE: for example, even if you "turn off" you monitor, (LCD, CRT, LED) but still have it plugged it to the wall plug, still consumes some energy. (might be 5% of the actual use when being fully functional) but in the long run, it becomes relevant.

It would be the analogy of a pipe which leaks. It will leak if you are using the water or if you aren't.

Not fridges, unless they have some sort of clock or other electronics. When the fridge compressor or light isn't running, the draw is zero. The vampire power in the 5% range you mention (hopefully less) is from stuff that has some sort of standby power requirements. Anything with an illuminated LED indication or clock, is obviously using some power but some give no indication.
And many, but not all, 'wall wart' transformers, like on chargers as you say, will have a bit of load when plugged in doing nothing.
