Harry is of course correct. Kobo licenses Adobe ebook technology. It's clearly specified in the documentation, AND RIGHT ON THE SCREEN WHEN YOU TURN YOUR KOBO ON.

However Kobo adds its own margin and it is outside the range of the numbers so they still end up in the text from time to time unless you want huge margins. They need to fix this.

Checked up on it. What's embedded is actually Reader Mobile, a distinct product. It's a stretch to call that ADE, considering the lack of UI and the fact that Adobe itself doesn't call it ADE anywhere. I'd be interested in Cyberman tM's clarification on which he meant when he said "IF (big if!) these numbers are from the ADE software".

It's Adobe tech, but they sure don't call it ADE. The boot screen's exact words are "Contains Reader Mobile® technology by Adobe Systems Incorporated." The Kobo User Guide says much the same.

No matter what you want to call it (and "ADE" is what it's always been conventionally called), my point was that it is this software which displays those marginal page numbers. That's the important point here.

Of course they don't call it "ADE". As per Adobe:

Adobe Digital Editions is a free, lightweight desktop reading application for PC and Mac that allows eBook consumers to easily download and organize their eBooks easily. As I'm sure you realize, the kobo is neither a PC nor a Mac.

This PDF may help you better understand Adobe's eBook platform and how their products work together.

Well, yeah. That's why I was puzzled when HarryT said "ADE is the software that displays the book on the Kobo."

That said, I didn't know Reader Mobile existed, so I did learn something new here!

Not quite sure what you mean, but here's a thread about what I meant:

Technically they have different names but they are a set of tools. ADE on the desktop is like Kobo on the desktop while Adobe Reader Mobile edition is like nickel, the Kobo software on the device. They work together and a Digital Editions directory is placed on the Kobo to store books and other information. They are collectively the Digital Edition hence HarryT's use of the collective term like collectively we use the term Kobo when we really mean Nickel.
