I have the feeling that there is a slight problem somewere in the creation process.
There was also some other non printable characters like C-y or similar. The problem was that these where extra characters so the filepos pointers pointed to the wrong place. Another possibility is that the compression is done in a different way then other files and that the uncompression in the Perl module then introduced the extra characters. They are probably not there in the source material.

I use MobiPocket Creator to make my Mobi files, and they've never given me or anyone I've heard of any problems. For the record, they are derived from Word 2000 files run on a Win2K PC, low-tech but effective. I'd guess there's something between MPC and Mobi2html that isn't compatible (and it may just be the difference in years from older to newer versions), but I'd have to look deeper into it with the creator (or the creators of both programs could get together).

I will most probaly not be noticed in a reader program. I think the python program also had problem unpacking. But this only seems to be an issue if you want to unpack to the original html file so no big problem for these files.

They are available in a number of DRM-free formats, and are a good read. He is known mostly for his thoughtful science fiction, and is also appreciated for his stance against DRM. He is an active member of the MobileRead forums, as well, so I hope you will consider supporting him by trying one of his titles.

And if you are already a Steve Jordan fan, be sure to check the bundle deals also.
And Encephalopath is a great read even if it is hard to pronounce and spell.

Which level of compression did you use?

Mobi Creator does not give me any compression settings to set... just encryption/no encryption choices. It converts the Word to HTML, and uses that for the build. I'm using version 4.0 build 22.

Mobi Creator is up to 4.2. The version I have offers "No Compression", "Standard Compression", and "High Compression" options.

Standard compression appears equivalent to Palm "doc" compression: about 40% on text. High compression seems equivalent to Zip (about 70%), but takes a lot longer, since they are using a technique that lets them start uncompressing at any point in the file. It's intended for dictionaries which need the extra space saving and the ability to uncompress the file starting at somewhere other than the beginning, for performance in word look ups.
