The guy who stole the Kindle and sold it to you robbed both you and the original owner. You file a police report (as did the original owner - which is why Amazon blacklisted it) and chalk up the experience to experience. You probably won't get your money back- that's why it is called getting robbed.

Ethics can be tricky sometimes, but not in this case.

try and get ebay to get you a refund. send it to amazon to give back to the real owner. learn from the experience.

The seller had all positive feedbacks.
I been buying and selling on eBay since 2004.
A scam is a scam.
I could send you my Xbox live box filled with bricks and you'd believe you'd have an xbox till u open the package...

Edit: I'm pretty sure Ebay has some safety nets implanted in their system. I think that it might be possible for Ebay to get your money back through paypal. If the required circumstances are met, ofc.

In the UK you would be required by law to hand it in at your local police station. By keeping it you would be breaking the law just as much as the person you bought it from.

Was it advertised on Ebay as being stolen? If not, send it back.

In the future - Ask the seller for the SERIAL NUMBER of the kindle BEFORE you send any cash! Check the serial number with Amazon.

If he refuses refer him to the middle finger of each hand and walk away.

If you use Paypal you're safe. You can get your money back by filing a dispute. Paypal has protection like that. I had to do this a few times in the past. It takes a while because they will have to investigate both seller and buyer but once they get all they need they will refund the money. You can either call them or open a dispute through Paypal's website.

Also be sure to report the person to ebay so they can look into it.

...and obviously Amazon is being unco-operative. They can't disclose anything and they don't care about whoever lost/got stolen the Kindle in the first place. Great stuff :\

Even if it was Amazon's policy to actively help get stolen Kindles back to their rightful owners, they might not even be legally able to do so (e.g. because of privacy issues) (I think this is the case, in your case). I'm quite sure they leave stuff like this up to the police as a policy. Even if they were in a position to help legally, they might choose not to, also.

What do you need from Amazon to be able to get your money back? I take it that it's just a confirmation that it's stolen, right? I connot see why that should be an issue on their part.

Edit: I'm thinking that it can be quite a headache having to prove that you in fact didn't get what you paid for, even if it's possible, technically speaking.

Recieving Stollen Goods is Against the LAW! Return it to Amazon so they can send it to the Rightful Owner! Not Worth going to Jail for!!

All I need is a letter saying, Device BLABLA is reported as stolen. <Name> Has contacted us to inform us about a fraud/scam selling on eBay and this is an official transcript from Amazon to confirm what he says is indeed true.

How hard can this get?

I agree. You're going to have to explain to PayPal/Ebay how you know it's stolen and they're basically going to have to take your word for it (Amazon told me so)--if Amazon, by policy, won't issue a confirmation of it's stolen-ness. Headache, indeed.

Can you not give the serial number to Paypal and have them call Amazon and confirm it's a blacklisted device? Make sure you're dealing with Kindle support and not the general Amazon customer service.

It's not like you are asking for whom it was stolen from just to confirm it is a stolen device. Keep trying you might have to call a few times or try going up the chain if you can.
