If you mean the ability to sync non-Amazon books on multiple devices, then yes, you need to use a relatively new feature of Calibre to accomplish this. I wouldn't count on Amazon letting that slip through forever, though.
I've never heard of sideloading anything to a Kindle bricking the device. PDF handling is not the Kindle's strong suit (partly due to the small screen), but it depends on the page size of the document. Text-only PDFs can easily be converted to .mobi format, and read more easily on the Kindle. |

They each offer their advantages. But I'll not even mess with my iPad in bright light. Forget it. The eInk shines there. I find it easier to add light (to eInk displays) via clip-on lights or case lights vs taking away light so I can read that LCD display. |

Right now I'm pretty sure I'll be grabbing a Kindle. I might do a little research to see what the nook just released, but I'd rather buy something that's been out there for a little while. Wishful thinking, but maybe the new Nook will push a price drop for the Kindle. |

Update:
I figured out how to get sideloaded books to sync across devices (tested on two computers and my android), and that was really all it took at that point to convince me, so I ordered a Kindle Wi-fi only tonight (didn't really see a need for 3g). I figured I have a month to test it out. Thanks for all the advice everyone. |

Take whatever ebooks you want to sync and load them into Calibre. Then update the metadata, making sure you use Amazon as the source. Then convert to .mobi. Now you can load these onto your devices and Amazon will sync the last page read (but not highlights).
