and lets be honest speaking of tech advancement's and eink aren't exactly like speaking of an industry you can't keep up with. The Pearl screen is the latest tech made available and all that is is a better contrast ratio, Eink in the tech world moves at a painful snails pace.

Also they are using a form of new tech by caching the screen refresh to have a much nicer page turning experience and using a stronger battery.

so with Eink basically at a stand still advancement wise, the only thing they can compete on is form factor hardware and some software high end features.

It appears to me barnes and noble taking a tweener approach between a bare bones simple ereader and full featured ereader. The form factor and some firmware advancements along with what looks like a great UI combined with some basic features.

and also any touchsreen is decades ahead of the kindles navigation j/k

But eink corp. is crippling the ereader industry. Until they truely fix the page turning and finally get color, You can only reinvent the wheel so many times.

Yeah, we're not getting any new eink technology until 2012, so BN is doing the best they can here. Amazon and Sony are pretty much restricted to a hardware refresh.

One of these puppies with CM7 on it would make an AWESOME high contrast mp3 player for the car, once you found someplace to mount it

Well the new Display from E-Ink is already there and rumour has it that it is going to be used for the chinese market this summer. I don't think that Amazon or Sony are far behind that.

So that "new" Nook might indeed soon look as "old" as it's technology is.

I remember when the Nook was first offered and my local B&N store manager tried to convince me that the reason why I couldn't get a member discount was that B&N was already losing money at $249. My response was that Riggio is taking too much LSD if he believed that ebookers were going to believe that fairy tale. I also told the manager that I was looking to buy 2 devices but I'd rather pay $50 more for the Sony.

It was long after that when B&N dropped the price. I happen to see the store manager again and asked what the fairy tale was this time. He had no response.

I don't know what it costs to manufacture these devices, but I suspect selling them at $99 would in fact be selling them at a loss.

I am skeptical that a $99 price tag would be a loss for B&N, but "loss" is such a loose thing to discuss anyway (does it include the price to ship the devices to the store, etc.)

Although B&N does not attempt to lock customers into their store (and good on them for it), most Nook owners that I know buy (a) almost exclusively from B&N and (b) far more ebooks than they had expected when they first bought the device.

So even if the device is sold at a loss, I think it would be worthwhile for them to consider doing it - or at least offering sales and specials on the device.

I mean, seriously, if it was $99 for pre-order only, I'd buy it unseen right now. And I NEVER do that.

There is apparently no web browser, so all you get is the built-in store interface.

There have been some complaints about it not doing landscape orientation, but when you really think about it, it wouldn't get you much with such a squat panel. I mean it's almost as wide as it is tall - not at all like the color nook.

I disagree. It has the same ratio as all other 6" screens, and it DOES make a difference, especially with PDF to be able to use landscape.

There's your problem, trying to read PDF. That's not a valid ebook format.

Well, be that as it may, lots of "eBooks", especially (but not only) non-fiction, are in PDF format so a GOOD eReader should have decent PDF support. Like the new Kobo and the current Sony.
