Clearly we all need to send long letters in Courier to the B&N CEO so that he can see our point.

Well, I pre-ordered one, since I conveniently had $140 in unused BN gift cards.

Pro:
1. Font choices--I hate all the versions of Caecilia on the K3, I changed to Georgia using a font hack, but I want choices.
2. BN free books and goodies in store. It gives me a reason to visit a real bookstore before they're all gone, and to feel like an iconoclast by reading books on my electronic device in BN cafes instead of surfing the net.
3. Both touch turn and buttons. I like page taps on my ipad 2, but also finger presses on K3 buttons on both sides--more options add ergonomic variety.
4. The browser and games on all the tablets and K3 are a tempting distraction--I want to be forced to just read.
5. Maybe BN's videobabe Kate will forgive me for buying a Kindle.

Con:
1. The similar Sony touch screen I had got crumbs and dust and cat hair under the bezel easily, since they need space for the IR beam to travel, so a cover might be necessary--but the K3 bezel is a cat hair magnet too. Stuff under the bezel led to quick battery depletion issues, too.
2. BN rep on Endgadget review made me cringe with babble about social networking and book recommendations on front page of Nook--if you're going to make me watch ads, give me a price break, like on the new K3. I'd rather have a simple list of my books, as on the original K3 or ibooks.
3. Trying to sell me Nook purses and pretty gift bags with my purchase. Hey BN, some males still read books--well, when we're not rooting and hacking and deDRMing.

I had the same feeling when I saw that. I had flashbacks to the recommended books on my NOOKcolor shop feature. They were constantly based on freebies that I downloaded with no way to tweak it to better reflect my interests. It was so bad, I stopped looking at the recommendations. Now I'm hesitant to download just any freebie, for fear that similar crap will pop up in recommendations.

Where are these recommendations? I must be missing them. I love looking at them and seeing what the algorithm thinks I should buy. It is so screwed up on Amazon, I chuckle every time I view them. I'll give BN an even shot.

On Amazon.com you can tweak your recommendations. When they list something you have the option to select "not interested" or "fix this recommendation". They tell you that the recommendation was based on a specific purchase. I like Amazon's customization. B&N don't offer that. What if I purchased something for someone else or bought something that I didn't like?

On the NOOKcolor the recommendations are on the bottom scroll menu within Shop.

Speaking of Courier, are any of the fonts monospaced (fixed width)? That would be nice with a lot of the public domain books that have ASCII graphics and tables.

No Games

It's interesting that they didn't include any games (Sudoku, Chess). Would have been nice with the touch screen.

I will never understand why people say this. I know it's a YMMV thing, and I swear I'm not being judgmental, it just seems like such an odd thing to say.

If I have to be "forced" to read, then that means I've been reading too much lately and need to take a break. Being forced to read is a bad thing - if reading is a job or something I "have" to do, then it's not enjoyable.

Different strokes, different folks, I guess.

I agree that the STR is bit on the ugly side. Side bezel's a bit too wide? It just seems like it should be just a bit taller to duplicate the familiar proportions of a hard book. One day we won't use paper as a standard, but I just don't think we're there yet.

But, once reading, a comfortable feel is the most important feature, and I trust that they did get that right. Classic Nooks are very comfortable. I'll have to hold one of the new ones in my hands at a store demo to see how it feels.

I do agree with ditching the browser and the mp3 player. They added cost, while adding little. Who doesn't use a Zune/iPod as their preferred audio solution?

Support is going to be big, though. Kindle has been adding all kinds of little apps, little things like games, unit conversion tools, etc, that really add a lot of customer satisfaction.

Battery life is fantastic, though. Congrats on the team for finding a reliable battery and keeping the current low enough to reach that. I will be happy if it reaches half that.

Recommendations (and searches) need to be improved at B&N. Having been an Amazon using before getting my Nook, it's something I really notice. I can't believe that some people don't realize how fantastic the searches and recommendations at Amazon and Google are. I guess I have enough programming experience to really appreciate good search engines and scratch my head at companies that don't utilize the search engines that are already out there. This is especially important when working on a remote device that loads pages slowly, like an e-ink device.

The new Nook looks awesome. I need pageturn buttons - I read fast and I don't like the extra ergo motion. I liked the look of the new Kobo but the lack of buttons was a deal breaker for me.

Hopefully you can turn off page swiping somewhere (my other wish).

I'll upgrade my 3G nook soon as I get some money...maybe in a couple of months. 3G is useless for me (I almost never buy DRM books, and I'm not an impulse purchaser...tight budget).
