If you're familiar with Amazon's Mechanical Turk, this is the approach they use with worker account suspensions:

Hello,

I'm sorry, but your account was closed due to a violation of our Participation Agreement and cannot be reopened.

Any funds that were remaining on the account are forfeited, and we will not be able to provide any additional insight or action.

Our Participation Agreement outlines the terms of our program and, since our suspension criteria are proprietary, we do not specifically publish or share them....

Thankfully, I haven't received that letter, but that's how you get canned.

Wow. You are right. I was not familiar. It's worse than I guessed.

Not only do they not publish the technical details, they don't even publish everything that the customer has agreed to (since apparently you must agree to these suspension criteria).

This reinforces my desire to not own a kindle.

Kindle couldn't have supported Epub from day one because Epub didn't exist when the Kindle came out.

Amazon didn't come out with the Kindle format to undermine an already existing E-pub. E-Pub was developed by the publishers to undermine Amazon's existing format.

epub is just a zipped up package of html files, why does Amazon make this so difficult!

I suppose what I meant was Amazon should have embraced openness from day one. Makes sense now.

I do agree that we should reserve judgement until all the facts are in. Will we be able to read epubs on our non-modified Kindles or not?? The suspense is killing me!

Would Amazon have insisted on DRM if the publishers hadn't insisted first? I suspect not, but it's impossible to say.

Do I understand it correctly that people have provided services for pay via Amazon's website and Amazon is withholding payment with no reasons given? I wonder how they expect this to stand up in court.

For the main part, it is you don't want to know the details

The majority of Kindle users, like the majority of Nook users are completely unaware of the details. They want to be able to download their books and read them. A few of the more aware know that they can copy other books onto their devices through USB, but otherwise don't care how it works.

Then again, the majority of users don't post here.

Epub was unvailed in September of 2007 to supercede the Open Book format. The Epub project was merely an update project, the publishers involved had been producing ebooks for some time. Their standard was inferior to Microsoft's .lit books and .pdb books for Palm.

Amazon released their Kindle devices two months later, in November of 2007.

Sony added ADE to the 505 (I think) in July or August of 2008.

Amazon already owned Mobipocket. So by going with that as the format with updated DRM, it meant that when Amazon started with Kindle eBooks, they would already have a good selection of eBooks available.

Looks like you're right; the Kindle was announced beforehand but wasn't actually released until November.

However, the larger point remains - Amazon could not have suddenly switched formats to epub at that point...nor was the fact that a group of publishers announced a new standard any reason to.

It was bound to happen Amazon insistence on mobi was as it wanted to get as many people as possible into its eco system. In the next few months at least by the end of the year its ereader unit growth would stabilize so then it would look to target users of other readers.
