OK - here's a fun question.

The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, was an architectural wonder of its time. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world from its opening until 1903, and the first steel-wire suspension bridge.

But, one week after the opening, on May 30, 1883, a rumor that the Bridge was going to collapse caused a stampede, which crushed and killed at least twelve people.

Who helped to debunk this rumor, and how did he do it?

Very good! Filboid Studge appeared in a short story of the same name by Saki (H.H. Munro), which lampooned the practice of successfully advertising a thoroughly horrible product as highly desirable! In this case, a young man wooing the daughter of a breakfast cereal manufacturer is tasked with convincing the public to buy and consume a virtually inedible breakfast cereal. An allusion to this appeared later in Vonnegut's "Breakfast of Champions" in the character of Philboyd Studge.
