What do you hope for in the new Nook?
Well in one week we should all know what the new nook shall be.
what features do you hope to find on the new nook. For me, if they are going to get rid of the color LCD screen, Which I love to death, I guess I'm hoping for a full blown touch screen similiar to the Sony's model. What about you? |

I would have to assume that Barnes and Noble would aim for making a $99 ereader. That just seems like the sweet spot in the market to me. They would then have the cheapest eink reader as well as what many consider the most affordable Android tablet. So I would expect the new Nook to have very few bells and whistles.

Based on what I've been reading, it will be touch-screen and pearl e-ink. This will give me my most-wanted improvement: better battery life. That's really my only big gripe.
Whether they could do that for $99, I don't know. The newer pearl e-ink screen is just an upgrade - I mean, the Kindle didn't get more expensive when they added that. In fact, it got cheaper - mostly from market forces, but still, it cannot be that much more expensive than what the current Classic Nook is using. So it looks like longer battery life may be a done deal. I hope. Touch screen does seem like it would be more expensive than $99, but it would give Nook a big selling point over Kindle, so which do they want more - better features or lower price? We shall see... ![]() |

What would I like to see... hmm.
I'm like something a little lighter and more slender. The Nook Classic has kind of that bulky "first generation" look at this point. I like the overall form factor in terms of screen size and the white plastic, but thinner would be much better. I may be the only person on earth who likes the little LCD screen for viewing covers; I don't mind if they keep that, but touch screen is cool, too, I guess. As long as they keep the physical page turning buttons - I wouldn't want to lose those. I do agree with wymore that a $99 price point is what they should be going for - it'd be a huge deal to undercut Amazon's $114 KWA (or KWSO or whatever they're calling it). Having said that, will I buy the new nook? Probably not right away; maybe never. ![]() ![]() |

Better battery life. Touchscreen would be nice.

For me, I'd like a screen the same size as the NOOKcolor and all touch. I find it hard to go back to 6 inches (after using the Sony 900). That's one of the reasons I kept considering the Sony 950. There's nothing else out there.
I know it's not going to recognize metadata from sideloaded books. I think I'm willing to overlook this since I have my NOOKcolor and will just put a handful of books on the new NOOK. Delete them when read and repeat the process. I'm willing to buy my novels from B&N just so that I can sync them with my NOOKcolor. I need an eink device for this Texas sun. I hope this is the one. Personally I'd like some way to rapidly jump from one book to another and back (up to three or four books).
I use my NOOK (classic) with a bunch of reference material and there are many times it would be nice to set book #1 to a page containing a table, book #2 to a page with some formulas, and then be able to refer to them while I'm actually reading/learning from book #3 Or by the same token, sometimes I'm reading something and I need to reference something else. I'd love to be able to jump to the reference, look up what I need, and with just a touch be able to pick right back up with my study reading. In short, TABS like with a web-browser. (for all I know the NOOK color can already do this) |

I doubt I would buy a Nook eInk as I already have a Sony 350 and B&N has a track record of lackluster reader firmware. If they want to get my attention in the future then any new readers need to have landscape reading, multi-tier TOC (Table of Contents) support, and multiple font choices. None of the manufacturers "of the most popular" eInk readers have embraced the concept of multiple fonts very well, and none have allowed the addition of fonts without hacking. Also any new reader must be lightweight! Get rid of that stupid LCD battery hog and weight addition! Go simple and small, but don't charge a fortune like Sony.
I definitely agree with Scion about the 7 inch screen. I loved it on my Sony 900 and 950 and love it on the nookcolor. Last edited by jswinden; 05-21-2011 at 01:27 PM. |

I love my eink nook. If they can just make it thinner and lighter and bump the battery life big time I might get the new one.

That's incorrect. On CyBook devices, for example, you can install your own fonts simply by copying them into a folder called "Fonts", and then select the font your wish to use from a menu.

Well physically, I think the eink Nook is perfect as is. I bought it at $249, and wouldn't have paid that for it if I wasn't completely satisfied with it.
The software on the other hand, I'm going to need BN to address it, tweak, make it more functional, and do a complete overhaul on the organization software. That said, I have no idea what the typical lifespan of an eink device is, but if I had to replace my Nook for any reason, I would like for it to be at least equal to whatever is on the market at the time. Would love for them to keep the lcd screen, but I completely understand why they wouldn't. (Battery life, cost, etc). Being able to view my covers is no longer a must have for me since I have the Nookcolor. If I can't have the LCD panel, then it has to be entirely touchscreen. A ghastly Kindle-esque keyboard would be the ultimate deal breaker. I guess a pearl display would be optimal, but honestly, I don't see a huge difference between Sony's display and the Nook's display. But at least it will shut people up about it. Slimmer and lighter would be ideal, but not if it's going to feel flimsy like Kobo/Kindle. Different color options and .... this will probably really be an unpopular opinion, but I wouldn't mind if they did away with the bezel buttons either. Basically, give me a lighter form of the Nookcolor, and we're good. |

I have both a touch-screen Sony PRS-350 and a Kindle. In all honesty, I find the Kindle's keyboard to be much easier to use than the on-screen "soft" keyboard of the Sony. What do you dislike about it?
