Yeah, because what the IT world urgently needs are more arbitrary naming schemes. Which reminds me, I actually have a leftover copy of Windows on one of my machines that I boot into from time to time. Should I call it a part-time PC? And I have VMWare on the others. Does my Linux box become a "real" PC once it boots an emulated copy of Windows? This is all getting so complicated.

I was trying to point out that, despite repeated claims to the contrary, Amazon's Kindle does not exist for all platforms, mine included. Either way, I'll stop here, my point having been made.

When the term "Personal Computer" was coined (trademarked?) it ran only PC-DOS, later named MS-DOS. Windows came along years later.

So if anyone tries to kick Linux off of the PC, I insist we kick Windows off too.

Back on-topic, and from a practical standpoint, I have yet to find any book that I want to read that is either not available on Amazon for my Kindle, or is not available in a Kindle-accessible format from other sources. I have apps installed on my Windows 7 64-bit operating system Intel quad core powered overclocked computer (i.e. PC ) to handle any purchases I might desire from B&N, and Borders that are DRM-crippled, and I use Calibre when necessary for conversions from other formats. The only potential issue is with library eBook loans, and so far that is a non-issue for me.

Practically all the non-English literature in the world, for starters. Of which there is a lot, or so I've been told. This is only beginning to change, very slowly.

Actually, I'd agree with you there! I just don't care what people want to call a PC.

I'm a Kindle owner and I wish other Kindle owners would stop hammering the K4* application mantra, too. None of those apps help people who own a dedicated ereader that's not a Kindle. Or a *nix computer (Wine solutions don't count).

DRM removal and format shifting aside, of course.

Please accept the fact that eInk reading devices natively supporting ePub are still but a small fraction of the overall devices on which eBooks can be (and are) read worldwide.

Amazon still has no need whatsoever to either include or switch to ePub.
But, it's missing the one device I like to read with, my orizon I didn't bought it to read kindle e-books on my phone.
Kindle for PC lacks a linux version indeed. And I can't carry my PC in the metro anyway. My phone can run Kindle for Android, but it's screen is way to small, and LCD. Nowhere near the comfort of a "real" reader.

Not so small. And they are the devices me myself and I reads on.

Perhaps the mods will need to move this to the "Religions and Politics" forum.

Umm... NO! "Personal Computer" was not coined when IBM produced the IBM PC running PC DOS (which happened in August 1981).

I used to get a magazine, Personal Computer World which covered the launch of the IBM PC. The magazine started in February 1978, so the term "Personal Computer" must have been in common use even then.

A Personal Computer is any single-user desktop-or-smaller general purpose computer. But a PC is now specifically a windows-based personal computer.

Language changes. I got over it. You should too.

I can do that right now.

Amazon doing ePud would be a good thing. It could use the guiding influencing of a strong benevolent entity.

I prefer not having to remove DRM & convert to mobi format, though...

I laugh at what I find humorous. I don't care if he had any ulterior product placement motives. I even laugh at myself now and again.
