What is this "no buy" zone of which you speak? Sounds blasphemous to me!
This from the person who bought the three Chris Norgen mysteries by Aaron Elkins and one 99 cent title from BN this weekend, and have two other things sitting in my Books on Board cart.

1. yes, that's it. It's the only chocolate kind I can't eat.

2. there's no next time, I learn from my mistakes

3. you can figure out the reason why Kenny was upset on his profile, the dialog between Kenny and the Terminator.

I was doing quite well — I was only a little under my target of reading three for every one that I bought.

And then fictionwise did the 60% off sale this weekend. And I wanted to get the back issues of F&SF that I didn't already have (I would have got them a while back if I'd realised they were available). And then there were a few other authors I wanted to get, and ....

well, I fell off the wagon.

I figured that.

I've totally stayed away from the fictionwise coupon because I was afraid I would buy too much. I'm trying to do my "read down the too large TBR list" I already have. I've told myself, that if I do well, I can buy a new toy later this year.

It didn't bother me that no one saw the planet until it was visible with the naked eye. Darkseid had already taken the Queen Industries satellites offline, and it's reasonable to speculate that he had taken similar measures with government satellites as well. As for amateur (as well as professional) astronomers, you must remember that a great percentage of the world's population was under the control of Darkseid, and it's logical to assume that these people would have been among the first to be targeted. And when Clark scanned the Daily Planet newsroom with his extraordinary visual abilities, you could plainly see that a large number of the reporters also bore the mark of the beast. Darkseid took extreme measures to keep the coming of Apokolips a secret as long as he could.

Now my problems with from a scientific perspective were twofold. First, the gravitational influence of any planet that close to the earth would produce devastation beyond imagining. The tug on the Earth's tides and tectonic plates would have demolished humanity. Second, the idea of Superman pushing an entire planet off of its collision course is absurd. Assume for a minute that Superman did exert a pressure on the surface sufficient to change it's motion. What would be more likely, that the planet would move, or that Superman would drive himself right through the planet? In order to move a mass that size, you'd need a surface to press against far firmer than any known in our solar system.

But I chalk that up to Superman not being in the realm of science fiction, but rather that of mythology. Like the heroes of old, his deeds are meant to entertain and inspire, but not necessarily to be believed. True, if I wrote the series, I would at least make an effort to keep the character in the ballpark of known physics, but my Superman wouldn't be nearly as "super."
Ok, that might be plausible. As for the other physics errors I didn't even mention them since it went without saying. The Earth would have been devistated before it got even half as close as it did.

I nobly resisted the 30% and 25% coupons. A 60% was just too much.

Oddly, if I was convinced that Fictionwise would be around in the longer term, I wouldn't have been so tempted. But I suspect it might be my last opportunity at those prices.

Can an ebook store have an "Everything Must Go!" sale?
Clear the shelves before closing - at least metaphorically?

Well, the 60% off obviously enticed one former customer to buy more stuff, and 40 cents on the dollar is better than nothing!

What is that?

Right now, I'm curled up with my blanket, drinking hot chocolate, and listening to the rain pour down.
