I rarely hang out outside my home except for places like Starbucks or Panera Bread, so I see plenty of people reading. Most often using laptops, newspapers, paper books, or lately iPads. E-ink readers are still rare birds.

I used to get sick reading in cars or on the bus, but I seem to have adapted. A big part of motion sickness is that you're looking at a fixed frame of reference (even moreso if you're staring at a page or screen) while your inner ear tells the body it's moving, so I make a point of looking out the windows and into varying distances often--I don't know if it is actually correcting the issue or more of a placebo effect, but it works.

I see very few readers on buses or trains--certainly more people playing with phones. I'm not sure if I've ever seen anyone with an e-reader on public transport. The only place I can recall seeing someone else use an e-reader is a bed and breakfast. Last edited by taosaur; 05-15-2011 at 06:46 PM. |

I don't know/see too many readers in the "real world". That's why I hang out in places like this online.

let me re-phrase the initial question - what percentage of all of the people you see on your commute are actually reading a book. I would say I could only account of 1% if that.

When it happened, my mom asked if I was reading (she told me 100s of times not to do it, but I didn't listen - no one else in my family read). I said "of course not." Don't think she believed me. I hid the wound from her. So it was good an infected when I finally showed her. |

Plenty of people who are reading on my commuter train here in the Frankfurt metropolitan area. Probably something like 40%. Most are reading paper books, newspaper or some work related documents, though. Ebook readers are still rare. The rest are toying with mobile phones, smart phones, iPads, Blackberries, are listening to music or sleeping/staring outside/staring into the void.

On the city bus? Usually one or two, but I suspect there are folks who read books on Smartphones and such where I cannot tell whether the text is an article, email, etc.

![]() But I can read on the train, I just have to sit at the very front facing in the direction that the train is moving. |

I recently flew back to Spain from the UK. I was in row 10 so that is 60 people in my row and in front of me. On a trip back from use of the facilities at the front of the plane I counted 11 people with readers of one sort or another (mainly Kindle but a couple of tablets too) and 3 laptops in use. This wasn't a commuter flight just a normal cheap airlines tourist type flight. So it looks like more people are switching from paper but the majority were looking into space or reading printed paper material.
