Very interesting, I was taught it was black cats that were lucky if they crossed your path - and white cats unlucky (which is why we have one !

You are right to be confused. This is one reading of the superstition below:

In America and Britain it is considered bad luck for a black cat to cross your path, however, if you stroke the cat's back four times take a step away from the cat, and spin three times, the bad luck is said to go away.
