I prefer buttons over a touchscreen. Even when reading my Sony Touch, I prefer to use the buttons rather than swipe. I have no desire to see the Kindle go to a touchscreen. Plus, I like the Kindle's ability to put the cursor just where I want it with far greater precision. That comes in very handy when copying text and making notes.

We all have the right to post here, but the purpose of the thread is not something you agree with or wish to add to in a constructive way. When I feel that way about a thread, I try to let the interested parties talk. No one's maligning your Kindle, mardek. That's the beauty of having a forum in which every thread needn't involve you or me personally -- they're talking about their Kindles, not ours. Speculating about the possible ergonomic drawbacks of a specific iteration of a reader I happen to own on a personal and empirical level is not the same as telling you that your reader sucks and how dare you buy it. Likewise, your finding no ergonomic issues with the Kindle 3 is great, but we're not going to enter a happy world free of war and racism if I pretend to agree. And how long ago was it that every forum member who owned a Kindle was complaining endlessly about slow page turns? I didn't agree with them, but I also didn't call them "retentive[]s." After all, they bought the thing and deserve to be able to criticize it. Last edited by Prestidigitweeze; 05-13-2011 at 05:42 PM. |

I'd like to point out as a "brit" that I don't require reading gloves or oven mitts to comfortably read my kindle ^^

Ho ho.
I agree that reading a book via the kindle is more comfortable than a physical book, but I also think that the experience could be so much better than it is. I have a cell phone, the surface of which is rubberised, and its thick with gently rounded corners. Its a delight to hold. The naked kindle could be equally delightful, with very little extra cost. I'd also like more free space for my fingers and thumbs between the left and right of the screen and the edge of the case, and between the bottom of the screen and the keyboard. Also, bring back the number keys and move the page turn buttons a few millimetres back from the edge so I don't activate them when picking it up. All of this will make the device larger for the same screen size, so perhaps Amazon should offer an extra version of the kindle for those of us who don't mind a little more bulk if it allows more comfort and convenience. |

All this talk of comfortable reading. I decided I had it with the BookGem after smashing my finger
![]() I realize I have been using my Android phone to read on instead of my K3 and we can't have that! I love my Kindle 3 just wish they relocate the back button on the next version and make the five way arrow keys a little bigger. I wouldn't mind a touch Kindle. I love my phone and the ease of using a touch screen. A month ago I was totally against a touchscreen reader then I got my phone and now I'm so use to it I find myself hitting my K3 screen and expecting it to do something. ![]() I prefer to read the Kindle without a cover in a stand it's the most comfortable reading for me. ![]() |

I haven't even got a touch-screen phone. I am happy with my Blackberry curve, and in fact just upgraded to a newer model. When I was first thinking of getting an ereader I looked at Sonys and Kindles and touch screens were a turn-off for me. I hope very much that Amazon doesn't eventually go to touch-screen or nothing for Kindles. I like to have distinct keys rather than virtual keys on a screen. I like real buttons that you can press.
Having said that, I think that the forward button for page turns on the Kindle is too big and that both forward and back buttons are slightly wrongly located. I also find it fiddly that they have these buttons on both sides. But once one gets used to the K3, it's not that difficult to avoid hitting the forward button by mistake. When I first got it, as it was my first ereader, I tended to hold it the same way as I hold paperback books. Now I have developed a special Kindle grip and it comes naturally. |

I find that the side buttons are placed perfectly for the way I hold the K3.. with the lighted cover folded over and supported by my left hand. My left thumb rests in the perfect spot to page back and my right thumb is in the perfect place to page forward.
I've had multiple touchscreen phones... and generally find them frustrating to use on those occasions when you have to hit the blasted icon multiple times for it to register. I don't have that problem with buttons. Put me down as a keyboard fan. ![]() |
