Well, since you ask, I swap out one of my back-up SD cards. I am not saying SD cards are any better back up than anything else. I am just saying that if a Kindle dies, you have absolutely, positively, lost anything that is side loaded and not backed up. If a Kindle dies, you will also have to go through the process of reloading and re-collecting everything that is not Amazon.

With my other readers, I never lose anything and in the event of a reader death, a card swap takes a minute. Kindle will always take me a lot more time to restore and adds a level of risk that requires additional back up. Not a deal killer, obviously, just an annoyance.

By lost, I don't mean gone forever. I mean that the files on the device are gone and I will have to go through the process of copying and re-collecting all over again. I always have multiple back-ups. My 1600 books are the accumulation of over 10 years.

It's best to occasionally back up your Collections.jsp file too, although when you sync at Amazon it is backed up there and available to be pulled down to a new Kindle.

Last time I received a new Kindle I copied the Collections file from my computer to the device and then dumped about 1200 books on there at once (using Calibre) - plugged it in to the wall charger and left it overnight to index. People say you shouldn't put that many books on at once but it worked just fine.

Hi all,

Just a quick note to say thanks for all your answers and suggestions. I went ahead converted all my secure ePubs, and ordered a Kindle. So far, very impressed. Faster than my Sony PRS-300, great interface and I'm very happy with it.
