Hey!! Let's get some action going! What are we reading?

I just finished DIVERGENT by Veronica Roth. Just awesome, best book I have read this year, so far.

I've been happily clicking along on my genre short-story binge--just can't seem to force myself to start a new novel quite yet.

Anyway, some of my favorites were:

The Architect of Heaven by Jason K Chapman from Clarkesworld issue #56 - A poignant Love vs Technology tale... reminiscent of Dan Simmons' Remembering Siri (which some may recall was the seed for Hyperion) from his short-story collection; Prayers to Broken Stones. Loved this one.

Two short stories by Genevieve Valentine (both based on the Circus of Tresaulti cast from her debut novel; Mechanique). Study, for Solo Piano from Fantasy Magazine and The Finest Spectacle Anywhere from Beneath Ceaseless Skies issue #68 - fans of Mieville will probably enjoy these New Weird dystopian tales about the strangest circus one could hope to encounter. I know I did--I'll be looking for her novel.

The Harrowers by Eric Gregory from Lightspeed Magazine - A post-apocalyptic tale filled with the "undead" and the new breed of people who hunt them. Unique and creepy.

Honorable mention goes to Matchmaker by Erin M. Hartshorn from Clarkesworld issue #55 - its theme is a little too overdone for my taste, but it was well written.

I keep meaning to catch-up on these shorts and start a novel, but new ones keep crawling out of the woodwork. Can someone say "addiction?"

I just finished 1984 by George Orwell and have moved on to a book club read - The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie.

I've heard good things about this trilogy. Hopefully they are warranted.

I'm currently reading Kathryn Stockett's The Help, and Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief (the first in the Percy Jackson series). Enjoying both a lot.

I'm currently reading Jack London's The Sea Wolf. I read several of his stories as a child in school (and enjoyed them all), but I somehow missed this one. I'm making up for it now, and loving every bit of it.

I read those when my son was reading them. I've only read the first three and really enjoyed the adventure.

Currently, I'm on part two of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy.

Finished a Game of Thrones. It's excellent. I really didn't think I'd like it as much as I did, and for a 807 page novel I finished it surprisingly quickly. I'm definitely hooked on the series, but given that he seems to take about 5 years between books I'm not sure if I should start in on the other 3 just yet.

I've just finished The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Lovely story - I enjoyed it as I do all Neil Gaiman novels.

Now, to keep The Blade Itself company I'm reading The Conjure Book by A A Attanasio. I'm tending to read an ebook and a paperback at the same time for the moment. I'm addicted to ereading but I have many unread paperbacks that I also want to read.

I toyed with the idea of repurchasing all my paperbacks as ebooks but think for the moment that I should actually just read them instead.

I just started "The Throne of Fire" by Rick Riordan. I'm also finishing off "The Curious Incident of the Dog at Night Time"

For a change of pace, now reading mystery w/history again. Finished The Seventh Sinner, 1st in Elizabeth Peters' Jacqueline Kirby, Sardonic Librarian Lady series.

A little slower to start and longer to build than I was expecting, based on the pace of Die For Love, 3rd in the series which I really enjoyed. Kind of like Borrower of the Night in the Vicky Bliss series, where the series is still finding its footing in the first book and reads a bit more generically than the following volumes.

Still, a fairly good amateur sleuth mystery taking place among a circle of close friends who are in denial that one of them could be the murderer, and a clever and hard to figure out whodunnit with well-planted see-how-you-weren't-paying-attention clues.

Only objection I have is to the motivation being chalked up in part to mental derangement, since I feel that tends to be overused as an easy out; why can't the murderer just be a clever self-justifying conscience-ignoring manipulative fill-in-the-blank who shamelessly takes advantage of their trusting fellow human beings for personal gain instead?

Mildly recommended, as it's not particularly distinctive in terms of the series "voice", which is much better established in the 2nd book The Murders of Richard III, which I'm reading as my dry-weather paperback in between Roberta Gellis' historical romance* The Dragon and the Rose, about Henry Tudor's maneuvers to wrest England from Richard†, which is making for an interesting compare and contrast.

* Actually more of a mildly romantic historical, which suits me just fine, being normally a no-romo.

† Amazingly, this is being sold by Baen's Webscription, of all places rather than the usual outlets which handle Gellis' non-fantasy romances and no, it does not involve elves secretly helping Henry to the throne nor are there any actual dragons in the story, though there may be actual roses.
