Jekyll Island, Georgia. I love it there. Not commercialized (although they are doing some upgrading right now

I don't know the US well, but I would be somewhere with hard-wracked cliffs and headlands interspersed with surfable, sunnable beaches as much of the year as reasonable, but with winter big seas and wind-chill to stroll along them. I'm guessing that means somewhere "California", with the added bonus of big mountains behind. Somewhere quiet, propertied (land), simple, but within the occasional couple-of-hour-drive outing distance to a good, big city (San Francisco?). Overlooking the sea and the beaches and the headlands from on-high on land where the nearest neighbour is out of sight would be ideal.

It is SO not rich there, though. It's kind of the Hilton Head for commoners.

I'd look for somewhere that's away from the most obvious natural disasters. Eg, much as I love the San Francisco Bay area, it's not somewhere I'd want to live - the "big one" is coming sooner or later. Nor would I choose to live in a place that's subject to hurricanes, such as Florida.
My favourite part of the US is Washington (state); I worked near Seattle for a while, and enjoyed it very much. One has both the sea and the mountains within easy reach. It also has four "real" seasons, something which for me is essential; I think I'd feel as though I was stuck in some kind of time warp with just sunshine day after day. Nothing beats a beautiful spring day, or going for a good walk of a cold, crisp winter's day. |

Chapel Hill, North Carolina. We have it all - the oldest public univeristy in the nation gives me some of the best libraries on the east coast, incredible venues to attend all sorts of sporting and cultural events, and environmental laws that ensure we will remain one of the most gorgeous college towns in the country.
But university aside, we are a great small town to live in. We have walking trails, good public trainsit, and a very low crime rate. I moved here 12 years ago to go to school and never left. |

Well, Chapel Hill, NC does have hot & humid summers, but can have "interesting" winter weather (anything from only rain to snow to ice storms - you never can tell from year to year). Locations along the eastern SE USA will be hot & humid - but carry the risk of hurricanes/tornadoes.
I love visiting the Savannah area myself. Not all real estate around Savannah, Charleston, etc is high end - largely depends on proximity to the coast. Eastern Washington state (Pullman) - near the Idaho border is gorgeous, dry, hot, but not humid in the summer -- but winters are VERY snowy. |

Cost of living, climate, culture, population density, landscape, proximity to family, the relative importance of these....too many unknowns, DG. Can you tell us a little more?
A friend of mine retired a few years ago and their daughter (who was interested in moving, too) did a thorough study of all the above and came to the conclusion that for them the best place to move to was northern Idaho. I'm not recommending it but I do recommend the process of carefully thinking about what's most important to you and considering all your options. You might be surprised at what you find. I haven't yet done that for my wife and me but I intend to. |
