When I was a kid, I was able to distinguish with the feeling of the book and smell, if it was new or not. I did like it, believe it or not. I had some kind of "adrenaline rush".
What I am trying to say is that the human touch of reading, feeling the real paper and interacting with a book, is very important for kids that are just learning how to read. Ereaders are "cold". As an adult, I think reading an Oracle book is the same on ebook or hard cover, actually more convenient on my Kindle or iPad, but I do not think that can be good for young children, at least that's my opinion. |

As I said before, I'm pleased that he likes books and being read to. He has been known to "read" by himself:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2sG9FrVx6M I don't really care whether he prefers paper or electronic books. I decided to try him with an e-book because if he was happy with them, then I could make sure that I always had one on my phone and Kindle, and would thus always have a book that I could read to him. If we go anywhere we usually take books, but I thought it might be useful to always have a "standby" for unexpected situations. I shared the story because I thought others might find it interesting. |

True, they also LOVE to turn the pages! It may be that he intuitively feels the reader is for grown ups

i think for really young children the colornook and the ipad are more friendly "ereaders" just the ability to have color pictures (some sounds and animations) will hook young children better.
dont get me wrong i like my kindle 3 alot, but my novels dont have "pictures" and now that ipad and colornook alike both have these crayola "crayons" that can color or draw on pages on the both devices make them a bit kid friendlier than kindle. |

Having tried a couple more, I can confirm it wasn't the lack of pictures, it's the lack of pages. He complained that it wasn't a book

Put me down as one who things it's turning the pages. There is something about the pages being turned that is stimulating.
I have a memory of it myself. As each page is turned a new part of the story unfolds, or new pictures become visible. It can even be suspenseful as it's a forced pause. I don't miss it now that I have my Kindle but I can certainly remember it from primary school days. Either way - books are awesome! ![]() Regards Caleb |

I think kids like the whole touch, look and feel of a book and can get really in to it. I remember when I was a kid how I felt when I would run home from school excited about another Enid Blyton book I took out from the library. I would sit on my bed and just escape in to the book.
My 8 year old son doesn't get why I read off a Kobo and looks at it like it's a snake ready to strike lol. He is not a avid reader of fiction but he gets the same look on his face when he reads a science book that I had when I read the Enid Blyton books. My 24mth old loves to hand me books and I hold them while he flips the pages and looks. He wouldn't get that experience with a eReader. He just sees my Kobo as a thing to look at and probably destroy in the process. lol I don't actually miss reading proper books. I LOVE my Kobo! |

i do not suggest to let a young children to read the e-book. the real book will be the only choice to the children.

Just a quick update - yesterday, while on a long car journey, I was sat in the back with Douglas (my 3 1/2 year old), reading my Kindle, when he asked me to read him a story from it. After a while, I managed to find something suitable and read it to him. He said he enjoyed it
![]() I guess he considers my Kindle to be better than nothing, so I'll be loading up a few children's stories onto it in case of future emergency ![]() |

I cannot get my wife to try ereading for all the reasons attributed to children in this thread. It is a leap to go from the tactile sensory process of reading a book to reading on an ereader.
IMO pbooks are better for young children because they are experiencing the entire process of reading from pictures to the cover art to the fancy fonts at the beginning of each chapter. If they transition to novel reading that will be less important. Who does not have fond memories of the children's books they had access too down to the littlest detail. My 13 year daughter who is the real reader amongst my children just inherited my Nook 1 and has not put it down, I may try again with my wife on the NST since it is less techy and more intuitive to read on. I say expose your kids to reading in any and all forms ![]() |

This is interesting to me. I picked up a discounted version of Artemis Fowl at Amazon during their Summer Reads program. I plan on having my 10-year old son read it too me over the summer. I am wondering how he will like my Kindle. He has told me that he has seen a few students at his school that have them.
