I finished Mistress in the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. It started off slowly but built up over time. Ms Franklin's writing is precise with a little wit. Some good artistry too. Although it takes place during 12th century Plantagenet England, some liberties were taken regarding medical knowledge of the time. Did "doctors" at the time know that boiling water prevented cholera? After a library visit I now have three choices for my next read: The Tripods by John Christopher Some Danger Involved by Will Thomas The City & The City by China Mieville |

I started the series at the beginning ... and loved it ... until the werewolf, Loup Garou, appeared. That was the beginning of the end as the series plunged downhill at that point!

As of late, I've become a sucker for revamped fairy tales. I've just finished the 5-part Return To Wonderland graphic series, in which Alice is all grown up, depressed, suicidal, and living in suburbia with her unfaithful husband, psychopathic son, and a teenage daughter sowing wild oats. It's the daughter, this time, who falls down the rabbit hole into a world of insanity and danger. I also finished the first story (five-parts) in the Fables graphic series, in which the Big Bad Wolf is commissioned to uncover the mystery behind the disappearance of Snow White's sister, leaving only a room full of blood behind as a clue. (Since their expulsion from the land of fairy tales, all the characters are living incognito in modern day New York City.) And that brings me to what I am reading now. I'm currently a little over halfway through this one on my Kindle. An enjoyable little tale, so far. |

Just finished reading The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins. I really liked it; actually preferred it to The Woman In White because I found it less depressing. It's told mainly in first person by a host of rather entertaining characters (with the exception of Franklin Blake; found his accounts rather boring. Couldn't decide who was more boring though; him or Walter Hartright). I was especially entertained by the accounts of Miss Clack though, I was either snorting with laughter or rolling my eyes. Am now on Alexander Dumas' The Three Musketeers. It was a huge favourite of mine as a child, and I think it was responsible for jumpstarting me on my preference for older men thanks to that Athos. |

Next up: The Complete Hammer's Slammers, Vol. 3 by David Drake I'm reading the ebook, but I actually have all three volumes in the deluxe, signed, leather-bound hardbacks edition from Night Shade Books. But I haven't got to reading them — I very rarely read paper books now. They are very pretty though....

Finished the Scarlet Lion which was even better than the first book The Greatest Knight. I warmly recommend both for anyone interested in Historical Fiction.

Have you looked at these? http://www.amazon.com/500-Kingdoms/lm/R3H5D8U5LQHSRF I've read the first one and it was pretty good. Although, nothing as dark as the above sounds. Lackey is a Fantasy writer. BOb
