You're advocating being insensitive, anti-social and oblivious to your surroundings?

You were a real early adopter. Was the 500 the first eink reader available?
What kind of stuff did you read on it?
(The Kindle was release about 1 year later, so I suspect it was at least germinating in Jeff mind by then.)

Probably it sparked his interest after he has seen Sony's invention.
Yes, Sony invented it and were the first company. There was LIBRIé few years before 500 but sold in Japan only, so usually it is being dismissed as the first ebook reader with eInk screen, although technically it is.

The usual one? Whatever I would read as printed version if I didn't have Sony. I am not sure (I have an inkling) what you mean by this question.

I don't know what you read in print either.
I mean I suspect there were not nearly as many titles available in electronic form. Certainly not like today.
So I'm wondering if you were reading a lot of text-only files from the Internet, public domain stuff, tech docs, scan-your-own, etc, or was there indeed a bigger ebook selection then I realize way back in ought-six?

There was a good Sony ebook shop. Fictionwise was the King. Other sources if nothing helped were available.
I read LRF files only. I cannot stand bad formatting. So, no txt, rtf, docs, pdf.
LRF files with bold, italics and the proper TOC.

Today is not any better, if not worse.

Astra, do you prefer LRF over EPUB?

I don't think "ashamed" is the word you want. I think you are closer with "conspicuous."

And it seems to me that your circumstances justify that feeling.

I expect to feel conspicuous when I buy my next EBR, but only if my wife sees me with it...I might have some 'splaining to do. (But really, I do need this new EBR even though I have several others because THIS one does mumblemumblemumble and enables me to mumblemumble more easily and was really quite cheap at the price, which was Look! over there! the dog is running off with your chocolate!)

Spelling books are said to be quite inconspicious.

No, not at all. Most of the time I'm too busy reading to notice other people's reactions to it.

Till PRS-650 it was LRF 100%.

650 is well fit to deal with ePub, so some of the latest ebooks are ePubs, although if I had a choice they would be LRFs. I miss chapter info at the bottom of the screen
I guess I have something like 80 LRFs created by me that I will read but I am not going to convert ePubs to LRFs, because I don't want to mess formatting, such as paragraphs, italics, bolds and other things. I believe the proper formatting is a must because it helps to generate a suitable mood, create the right atmosphere.
One day, I might learn a bit of html in order to be able to edit ePubs - remove spacing between paragraphs.

Dogs should not eat chocolate, it can actually be deadly.

Anyway, I've come up with this solution for my new gadgets which reduces the explanation level:
Buy it and hide it for, say 3-4 weeks. Then casually just start using it as if you've "always" have had it.
When better half questions you, you go:
"This little thing? It's not new, I've had it for very log time."
