Tor rocks for doing this and for listening to comments. Having the three choices is a great way to go. I'm gaining lots of respect for them...

That's strange. I've asked for the HTML version yesterday morning and received it in the evening.

Well, it took me five minutes to make a nice looking Mobi file with the HTML version, so I'm not complaining. Searching the web for a bigger cover image was easy.
But yes, it would have been great if the HTML and PRC were better looking to begin with.

I can take the HTML and the PDF and make a nice looking LRF and then a nice looking PRC from there and then a nice looking iMP. Not all that hard really.

Jo Walton tells me that her brilliant alternate history/murder mystery novel Farthing (see here) is one of the books that Tor are going to be giving away. Actually, she didn't tell me it was brilliant, I added that bit. But it is.

Tom Doherty may be the savviest guy in publishing, and Tor has historically had much more of a clue than other publishers.

Consider that Tor publishes the paper versions of Cory Doctorow's books, and doesn't get upset at the fact that he offers electronic versions in an assortment of formats free on his web site. Most publishers would have apoplexy at that idea. (Cory is doing well enough on pbook sales that he quit his day job to go full time freelance.)

In general, Tor Gets It. Not always, and they don't always get it right, but they have a much higher batting average than anyone else I can think of, save Baen Books. (They also have a broader list than Baen. Baen is a pure play SF/Fantasy house. Tor does other things as well.)

TOR has The King's Peace listed, but not the second book. Why?

Out of print, I would guess. Tooth and Claw isn't listed either. They're both available on Amazon.com, and The King's Name is available for the Kindle, though not the others. There never was much logic in the publishing industry.

To those of you who haven't gotten the HTML version of Mistborn, I sent my request in to questions@tor.com at around 4 this morning and got a response with the attached format within six hours.

Hope that helps!

Does the HTML of Mistborn have a ToC?

very true. It does make no sense. Why have eBooks of books in a series and not the entire series? it's like starting a three book series from #3 because it just came out. But not #1 or #2.

Something that may be interesting... On his blog, John Scalzi talks more about Tor's free ebooks program:

I think the Old Man's War .prc file that was emailed from TOR was just fine without any tweaking. Has a great cover image, the title and author format are right for my Kindle. The only thing I can see is it doesn't have a TOC but for a free book, I'm not complaining since I don't really use them all that much anyway.

By the way, I'm really enjoying this book so far. I like John Scalzi's style of writing a lot.

What you could do is make a ToC for the HTML and run it through Mobipocket Publisher.
