I am still looking for Death and life of superman, I own the hardback and paperback, but I can not read them on my edge pocket... since I own the physical book, would it be illegal to download a ebook format?

I know with video games (like Nintendo and whatnot) if you own the physical copy of the game you can own a digital copy as a backup. The same is true for movies, if you own a beta-max, VHS, laser disk, or DVD you can legally own a digital copy of the movie.

I feel that the same should be true for books! If the physical copy gets destroyed you should be able to keep the cover as proof of purchase...
The same is true for books. You're free to scan your physical copy to create an ebook for your own personal use. Just like you're free to make your own backup copy of your movies and video games.

Downloading an illegal copy (whether it's games, ebooks, or movies) is not the same thing as making your own backups.

I am not asking for illegal anything! I am asking for a digital copy of a book I already own!

So where do I find my book?

I am sorry but I do not understand the difference? An electronic copy is an electronic copy. I can go to a company that scans books and pay $80 to get a scanned copy of any book... Is that also illegal? What does it matter how I got the copy if I own the physical copy?

THIS THREAD IS NOW ABOUT EBOOK ETHICS...

Luckily, you don't have to understand it to be on the wrong side of it.

Not really. I'm not making any ethical or moral judgments about what you ultimately decide to do. You're free to make up your own mind on that. I don't really care. I'm just telling you how the law sees it: if there is no legal (sanctioned) ebook version available, then any copies that are uploaded--and subsequently downloaded--are violating copyright (if the work is not public domain).

To stay in the clear, make your own ebook from your own physical copy and keep it to yourself... or if you don't care about staying in the clear, then go ahead and download a copy. Either way, it doesn't change the fact that no one here is allowed (because of MobileRead rules) to direct you toward an unauthorized copy of this book.

That would depend on where he lives. I know all of those would be illegal in Europe. We have no right to back up anything unless the publisher specifically grants us that right.

I think a pretty solid rule of thumb for this site is: If you feel you need to post your arguments for why you think what you're asking for should be legal to your mind, then it's probably not an appropriate request here.

It's a red flag, sort of the way emails that contain explanations as to why they are not spam are almost always spam.

Indeed.
I should learn to append "in the U.S." to my posts. It's embarassing how often I seem to make that assumption in an international community. My apologies.

What makes you believe that you have a "right" to an ebook merely because you've bought the paper book?
