I made several covers for my 300 before I settled on a design I liked. All of them had at their core old bookcovers-- I looked at a local Goodwill store for hardback books with about the right thickness (length and width aren't as critical, because the boards can be trimmed) and removed the pages from the books. I then tried a couple of methods of covering them with fabric with glue, which didn't work well, and I ended up hand stitching two sheets of fabric (a faux leather) along all sides of the cover. The reader was held to the cover with velcro. I haven't made a cover for my 350 yet, but I saved a ragged old leather jacket that would otherwise be thrown away to use on the reader when I get around to making the cover.
Thank you, that book idea gave me one. Instead of ripping out the pages I'm going to cut a hole into it (like a book safe) and set in inside. Then get a simple start over the cover to keep it closed.

Thank you for the inspiration.

I don't want to clean it, that's what the website told me to do for it. They have a section about taking care of it. It has instructions for daily, weekly, and yearly. That's a bit more effort then I'd like.

Microfibre cloths usually from "Homeware" stores, discount ditto, hardware stores - or, for bigger ones. I've seen them in car accessory stores.
Or, sew 2 together.
Actually, if you simply made a slip-in cover [double thickness p'raps?] to keep it in a firm case, wouldn't that do the job ?

Blimey O'Reilly, that's a bit much !

Like Mrs. Beeton's [or someone of that ilk] tips to the housemaid for polishing a new table :-

Once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year, and thereafter or when required............

Alcantara is used for a multitude of things. Clothing, car seats and couches are the most common. This is the reason why there are a couple of cleaning rythms and methods are stated. Most people tend to clean their clothes more often than their sofas (or so one hopes).

I thought common sense would take care of this question, but obviously it does not.

You can buy Alcantara with a Scotchguard finish that repells stains and spills or you get the plain stuff that is easy to clean and to take care of. You only would clean it when it is dirty. There is no obligation to do this daily.

Actually, I don't see the point of this thread in whole. Either you go for one of the lightweight, easy to open Sony cases or you do one yourself using which ever soft cloth you like. So where is the problem?

Well the point of the thread was know what materials would be safe if I was to make a soft cloth one.

I'm sorry if my questions are dumb, but I just didn't want to scratch my reader.

Didn't think of hardware stores or car stores. Thanks for the tip.

Just to be clear and sorry if it's a obvious answer, but would the ones for cars be the same as the ones for computers? Are they just as safe?

Yes, Grandma - microfibre is, well, micro fibre.
I think it's just a marketing ploy i.e." amazing microfibre car-cleaning cloth" ", which is one I've seen!

Just thought - there are also "special lightweight camping towels, easy to carry, pack, & the only towel you'll need" etc.. , so there's another source - tents/camping equipment stores/centres.
I've got a couple, and they're a bit bigger - but because they're "lightweight blah, blah... " for camping/ leisure they're dearer than the kitchen/ car ones .

It's all the same stuff, just a bit thicker, & less lurid colours, far as I can see!

How about terrycloth? I mean, if it's soft enough for babies, it should be soft enough for your reader!

Funny, you sound just like one of my grand-kids.

See it's people like me that fall for the "special magic cloth...1 of a kind"

See that's what I thought, if it felt soft it should be good to use. Then I read or head something about the way the fibers are made certain soft materials actually scratch screens and some that are soft and wouldn't scratch them on their own have too big of pores or holes or something and can trap debris in them that will scratch it.

Maybe I misheard or was being scammed, but I just wanted to make sure.

What can I say, Grandma likes to play it safe.

I have some microfiber dishtowels that I got at Target - I see no reason you couldn't line a case with those. Or a car washing towel from the auto parts store. Or some microfiber eyeglass cleaning clothes. Or just plain 100% cotton fabric - cotton shouldn't scratch a reader.

You could cut up a plastic tub for stiffening. Cut up some mouse pads for padding - I have made a lot of cool stuff out of cut up mouse pads, covered with fabric.

Don't line your reader case with the same towel you used to clean sand off your shoes.

OH no, that's just what I was going to do. Well I'll just have to use the one I clean up metal shavings with.

No, grandma is kidding, I'm not quite that bad. Almost, but not quite.

Thank you for your information. I have found some very large microfiber towels and am starting my plans.
