"The Vampire Lestat" by Anne Rice. I'd enjoyed "Interview With the Vampire" and had read it several times, also seeing the film, so it seemed natural to read the sequel. But it was so heavily macabre that I couldn't get past the first 100 pages. Too dark and bloody. And I was a goth!

Anne Rice has written a Sleeping Beauty series under the name Anne de Roquelaure. I read a review somewhere that touted it as politically correct feminist erotica, unlike that nasty male pornography stuff. It was well written, but holy cats it freaked me out, I couldn't finish it. I was expecting consciousness raising, but it was just hair raising. I'm sticking to porn, sorry.

"The Road" by Cormac McCarthy
After being recommended by a friend this book accompanied me to a vacation in Greece. Boy, that was not what I had in mind when I had asked for "something nice for the beach". After about a hundred pages worth of travelling between cozy summer sun and hopeless postapocalyptic madness I had to give up as soon as Spoiler:
The language is really concise and conjures up extremely vivid images - I totally admire the craftsmanship. But since my girlfriend had to cuddle me out of a semicatatonic state after I had dropped the book, I can't really recommend this book to overly sensitive people (like myself). Edit: Reading this book is very much like watching a movie by Michael Haneke: It's good stuff but it makes you feel utterly miserable about everything. You know, I remember stopping reading Anne Rice's _The Witching Hour_ at one point way past midnight because it was really creeping me out, but I don't know if that would qualify as "good" because I was kind of skimming it as well.

The only book that has truly bothered me was "We the Living" by Ayn Rand. The whole idea of socialism carried to the extreme and destroying peoples hope was extremely depressing. I found it very hard to finish, but did and then re-read it about twenty years later with the same result. A great book but disturbing.

I almost stopped reading "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" because of it's anti-religion, anti-God leanings. I state this not to start a discussion on religion or spirituality, it is just how I feel. I am a Christian and I found his anti-God comments disturbing to me. It was a good book otherwise.

I almost did it with Absurdistan: A Novel by Gary Shteyngart The hero of the story is really repulsive but it was a great read.

Yep. I stop reading if books become too disturbing and I stop watching movies if they start to freak me out. Torture, for example, always makes me move on. I quit watching a Firefly episode just last night because of torture. Sad, but true.
