I'm very saddened to learn this news... had been hoping against hope that Russ would somehow best the chronic fatigue syndrome that plagued her in later years, and write a few more gems.

It's hard to find her work nowadays, and only The Female Man (one of her earliest books) is available as an ebook, but by God could she write. She won the 1972 Nebula for "When It Changed" (a short-story version of Man), the 1983 Hugo for "Souls" (one of my favourite Russ stories), and created a memorable feminist sword-and sorcery heroine named Alyx whom I absolutely loved. That doesn't even begin to touch on her non-SF fiction (e.g. On Strike Against God), literary criticism (How to Suppress Women's Writing), and her numerous articles, short stories, analytical pieces--all of which combined passion and wit.

Rest in peace, Joanna. I'm truly grateful for everything you gave us.

They had help from post # 4. I'm hoping the 3 posts just happened to all have had a bad day myself. It's possible that ps249 was having a busy day when they posted the posting that seems to have inflamed others so much and so hadn't had the time to write a longer posting. I wonder if they will be back after being jumped on like they were.

They were pretty awesome, weren't they? And I always thought Russ's shoutout to Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd in the first Alyx story, "Bluestocking", was extremely endearing. I love that Leiber went on to write Alyx into a couple of his stories.

Lieber, too, was an unsung hero. Or perhaps sung occasionally, but never often enough. You remember him for his deft little touches and his valorization of thieves. So many writers after him built on that -- Vance, for one.

Russ I remember for her confrontational symphonies.

So far as I can tell, the whole problem began with post thirteen.

(Apologies. Couldn't resist.)

It's never appropriate to be disrespectful at someone's funeral. Joanna Russ passed away last week.

Hence the bristling responses to the post containing only these four words: "never heard of her." You might think we were harsh, but consider how that sounds in context:

A: My best friend died yesterday and I miss him. His name was Joe.
B: Never heard of him.

Like Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, etc. And some only write a small body of work that prior to the net might not have had a wide circulation as well. Sometimes the works of an author are better known than their name as well I think.
The thing with Joanna Russ is that she is more famous as a person and for her influence than for a specific book. If you are interested in science fiction and read about it you cannot avoid noticing her name. But you can avoid reading her books which I have managed to do. Have read some ot the short stories.

I finally read The Female Man by Joanna Russ. Here's the soapbox blog opinion post: http://fridafantastic.wordpress.com/...y-joanna-russ/

You might like this if you like…
Feminism, experimental narratives, mind screws

Tropes:
gender bending, mind screw, no fourth wall

Overall:
I liked it, but definitely not for everyone.

Let me know if any of you have read it. Sort of itching for a discussion

But how can she be remembered if no one knows what she did? You should be taking every opportunity to tell people about her, rather than getting pissy.
