Pbook is worth more than the e-book so no. Especially as a cut and scanned e-book is likely to be hard to read.

I find the thought of purposely destroying a pbook, for any reason, to be very upsetting.

I'd rather wait until the book became an ebook that I could buy. Just like I'm waiting for about half a dozen other books right now.

What is annoying is for pbooks I own but can't fine either ebook or dark net versions and I've gotten so used to only carrying the ereader around... Cheers, Simon. |

I'd have no problem destroying the pbook. Although to be honest, I'd probably donate it to my library or leave it in a public place for someone else to enjoy.

Destroying books just feels wrong. I knew a person who always put her drinks on books to protect the surface they were lying on (table or sometimes even bed) - I find it incomprehensible - I'd put the drink on anything else to protect the book.

I shudder about "destroying" books, too, but that's what happens to old books, eventually. It's not quite as bad as pushing grandma down the stairs to "accelerate" the natural course of things -- there are usually other copies of the physical book, somewhere ... and you still have your electronic copy.
Personally, with a handful of exceptions, I have no interest in keeping paper-based books. |

I agree with you there depending on the state of the old books. The library I worked at once threw away a whole skip full of old books, most were reference non-fiction and so hardly used. Luckily they offered the books to staff who wanted them so I saved about 100 books, wish I could have saved them all, it was such a waste. I would have understood with old books that were in tatters but these were pristine.

I don't feel comfortable getting a book off the darknet, why would I feel comfotable getting the same from a friend?
I tried this with the ebook of Stephen King's The Dome, which was windowed. I got a version off the darknet, and signed up for the ebook. Buy the time the ebook was released, the price was down to $7 because of all the pirating, and the fact that the hardcover was the object of a price was between Amazon, Target and WalMart. Although I convinced myself that no one was hurt, I didn't feel good about that, and have not done it since. Last edited by Sydney's Mom; 05-02-2011 at 02:41 PM. |

If I had to destroy the paper book to generate the ebook, say by cutting the spine and scanning all the loose pages, then I might be okay with it depending on the book. But just to destroy a book, no.

Destroy a book? Never - at the very least, give it to a thrift shop so someone more unfortunate than yourself can read something.
Or at worst, so they can use it in a more practical manner....... |

I don't collect paper books and never really have (except I did have a nice teaching book collection and passed that on to my kids), but I cannot stand the thought of destroying a book. If I had the physical book, I'd probably give it away or keep it to read, but I wouldn't do a trade. To me, it's not the format of the book that's important. Ebooks are more convenient, to be sure, but if I already own the book in paper format, I wouldn't "need" to get it in digital format, as my purpose is not to collect books.
