Wow...I think this is a GREAT idea! Index the price of the book with the demand! Genius!

Look...you're sitting there, a poor indie author with a book to pimp. You price it at 99 cents and people start to buy it. It's good (that almost goes without saying...heck, let's say it's a work of pure genius!) so word spreads and more people want it.

So you start jacking up the price! It's like a stock whose value is rising! Better get it quick because it's only going to get more expensive!

By the time it becomes a bestseller, you're making $14.99 just like the big boys!

I wish I'd thought of it!

For all intents and purposes, ideas are copyrighted. Anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you something.

You cannot convince me that the words in a book do not convey an idea into my mind because I am telling you that they do. So you wish to copyright the words and strangle the idea before it has a chance to reach my mind? I must tell you that this is unacceptable behavior for any free society to behave in and thus any society with copyright systems in place is NOT FREE.

Copyright is a legal protection. The law in the U.S. says that ideas cannot be copyrighted.

Who the heck said anything about words not conveying ideas? Of course they do--at least here on Earth--but only the words can be copyrighted, NOT THE IDEAS.

I have an idea--from now on, I'm going to engage in conversation only with Earthlings. Bye.

Price fluctuations aren't new. For instance, if you shop at JCPenney, you would be a fool to buy something at full price, as they are always running sales. So are you saying that I can say "this item was on sale last month, I want the sale price"? I would be too embarrassed. Or as the car salesman said to us right after we refused to buy the car to take advantage of the November deals-"Well, there will be more deals in December."

Most B&M stores I shop at do price adjustments within a specified period. Why would you be embarrassed to ask? I'm embarrassed to overpay!

Please understand that the notion of a "sale" has no meaning in a system where the "owner" of the property is able to set their own prices for selling the property to others. Every price is exactly what the owner wants it to be at all times.

I still don't understand how an idea can be separated from its textual representation, they are manifestations of the same thing. for instance,

IDEA

The above is a word and is also an idea, an idea about itself specifically. How would we represent the idea without using words?

The law of price vs demand is still in effect, the publishers are just stretching price to the point where demand is dropping. Some people sell to try and get more money via volume, some people try to get more money in each sale.
