OK,
The newbie'll throw in his $.02 with a vote for Anna. Maybe I'll get all the way through it this time (though I could say the same thing for Don Q). |

Okay, 1984 isn't PD in the US.
The questions in my mind are: Who is flogging this really old book and profiting from it in the US? How do they have the right to the book? George Orwell hasn't been with us for some 61 years now, and his wives are gone now too. His surviving widow hasn't been with us for 30 years now. Is there some sort of trade in old book rights in the US? |

life + 50 in canada, hence the pd designation. my guess is the publishers that owned it are milking it for whatever they can until it finally hits pd. they're the ones benefiting from any sales, plus any school purchases (i'm not sure if it's still read in schools but it was when i was in highschool ) |

I'm only playing devil's advocate because the vote is so close this time and led me to wonder but.....
It'd be interesting to see what would happen if there were two quicker votes - a first to narrow the field down to a few choices, and then a second final run-off between the top vote-getters. instead of a minority plurality winning with possibly as little as 11% of the vote, we would have a majority or much closer to a majority choosing the selection. |

sunsurfer, I remember that sort of vote happening, maybe last summer. The winner actually had very little support, and not many people read it.
Still, you have to admit that this horse race is sort of fun! |

I think this part of the voting would still be fun either way. It also seems like more people would be invested in the winner that way, so I'm surprised you would say the winner would have little support? That would be as if we had a run-off between 1984 and AK...I don't see how the winner would have little support either way. Only more votes from the people who used their first vote on a book with less support and would now have the opportunity to have a say in which of the top two (or so) books they'd rather read... Anyway, I'm not necessarily lobbying for a change. It was just an idea I had that interested me that I decided to throw out there and see what others thought. |

sunsurfer, I'm not saying that this month's winner would have little support. I'm saying that it did that one time last year, because there was such a close vote among a number of nominations.
Actually, now that the weather is turning nice, I'm skeptical that either 1984 or Anna Karenina will be read by many because they both have the reputation of being on the serious side. That's why I think it wouldn't be a bad thing if Purple Sage were to win. |
