My opinion to stop reduce piracy is to find all publishers in the world and force them to read this thread. There are numerous examples on how we "honest people" would like to have our (e)books, music, podcasts, internet presented.

Piracy will always be there. Some people will pirate/steal no matter what. And they also steal physical goods.

Unfortunately If/when the net is off and all ways and technologies allowing piracy to thrive are over, the authors can stop worrying about pirates and start worrying about the corporations that will milk them really bad in exchange for accepting to publish them. If that is any solace to the authors then by all means let's all go to that "brave new world".

Although it won't eliminate piracy altogether (nothing will do that short of no more ebooks) I think they really need to just lower prices. One of my favorite authors is having a book published in Jan, so I thought I would pre-order the book. $14.99... for the ebook version! There's no way that I'm paying that for a ebook. I won't steal her book, obviously, but come on! It's $2 more for the hardback edition.

Also LOL at the "two-minute, unskippable video of a noted author persuading us that book piracy is the moral equivalent of murder" Priceless.

That won't do it either. My books were torrented, and they're only $3.

(Full disclosure: Okay, I'm actually sure that my books were torrented, not because of their quality, price, or anything else, but specifically to "punish" me for my statements about piracy and DRM.)

I've seen a few writers who speak out against piracy get their books pirated to Helen Back as a result. I call it the Harlan Ellison effect.

Well, since I consider unlimited sharing of my books, in violation of copyright, as also akin to punishment, it does mean they're taking advantage of me. Why would you do that? You'd do it if you didn't like someone... and I know people dislike me for my opinions on digital security. Piracy is NOT a sign of adoration.

It's either that, or all the statements that "books that are low-priced, in multiple formats, no DRM, no geographical restrictions, well-edited and well-proofed, won't be pirated"... is just plain wrong, since my books are in the torrents now, despite the fact that, as so many others here love to point out, I'm a nobody.

(Which strikes out another way to beat piracy... even obscurity doesn't protect you from being pirated.)

Yeah... of all people I want to be associated with (I hate Ellison)...

Yes, 'cuz a class of people defined by their breaking of laws and infringing on other people's rights would be expected to be a far more upstanding and respectful lot.

I've disliked him forever. I can't enjoy a single one of his stories, because I can't divorce them from him.

You forget, some are pirates anyway just because. Those are the sales youll never get, theyve been mentioned often. The problem is you dont know which is which and really this is just a waste of time trying to figure it out. Youll honestly never know what kind of pirates there were or how much you lost if you lost anything.

But Im confused. First you said you were alerted by Google about a download link, now you know of a torrent? Im wondering where this torrent is, does it have any comments? Anyone say anything about it? Is it well seeded? Does it have a listing as to how many times its been downloaded? Or is it completely dead? Does it have any other books or are they all just you?

I'm sorry your book was pirated...but theft happens to us all. Someone climbed 3 stories to steal our bikes. Shoot, one of my customer’s cargo and employees were jacked by REAL pirates on boats with guns…if you think someone stealing your book is bad, wait till they try to steal YOU.
