Bingo that is exactly it. To "Root" an android device really just means gaining adminstration rights on that device.

I've seen the video where you unregister it and wipe it before doing the 8 failed boots.
Yes you can get th B&N for Android app, which in my opinion is better than the nook stock reader.

There are ways you can restore the stock OS, I've never looked into them because I know I will never restore the stock OS.

If you have a desire to go back and forth, I recommend you install as a dual boot or install the custom ROM on an SD card.

Thanks for all the help.
Most ROMs are build require the use of "ROM Manager" aka Clock Works Recover Manager (CWR/CWM) to install. That is a good thing since all you have to do is place the ROM on the sdcard and boot into recovery mode. Then you apply your ROM and go on your way.

Updates are usually provided as zip files and are installed almost in the same way, requires CWR. So there is no data loss and updates are painless.

No problem.

Yes I've heard of folks using the BT audio to make calls. I haven't tried making calls on my device, but I do know my BT headset does work.

Also from the XDA forums I've heard of folks soldering on a mic.

The BN app store is overwhelmingly underwhelming. 149 apps, handful are free and the prices are higher for some apps than other app stores.

The Asus Transformer is looking pretty good also...

I'm disappointed that there appears to be an official GoodReads app in the store, but still no official GoodReads app in the Google Market. I've been using some fan-developed ones, and they're nice, but nowhere near the GoodReads official iPhone/iPad/and now apparently Nook Color versions.

So this Goodreads App can be used with the new update on non-rooted NCs, but not rooted ones? Is that correct?

I was hesitant to leave the fold because of the magazine viewer. Now that Zinio for Android is finally coming to fruition, I can say farewell. Guess I'll sell mine for $175 on craigslist. Should be gone within a couple of weeks.

The only way I'd ditch my Color is if another Android tablet appears on the scene with better features and selling for $300 or less without a contract and data plan.

Seemingly. You have to have access to the Nook App Store, and the rooted nooks have access to the Google App Store.

Someone did say that they've rooted an NC with this update, but I don't think it was with the autonooter method that retains the overall look and feel of the device - I think it was someone using CM7.

Does the new update allow for deleting books off the NC (not just archiving, but actual deleting)? If not, does the rooted nook allow for it?

I'm ready to part with $450 for a full featured 10 inch WiFi only Honeycomb device. Spent the morning at Best Buy playing around. Again, the NOOKcolor is my only device for reading. Very comfortable reading on an IPS display. Since the stock reader/library doesn't suit me and never will, there's no reason for me to continually moan and groan about it. I could do the custom ROM thing -- just don't want to at this stage.

You don't even need to do a "custom" ROM... just rooting the exist OS is fine, and even easier.

Here's a pic of my rooted nook color: (the photo does not capture just how vibrant and clear the screen is)

Yeah I agree with your comments, BTW what devices are you considering?

Is that your home screen? What you boot up to? I've rooted with autonooter 3.0.0 Is it possible to a screen that looks like that?

Yes, that's my home screen. When I turn on the device, it boots up to what you see. I use Zeam as the home screen/launcher.

I've been rooted since December (see my device list). That's why I said I'm ready to move on.

@anamardoll - I saw this on the Goodreads blog.

Our app makes the NOOK Color the most social ereader available! We love making Goodreads portable and accessible, because it is our core belief that a book comes alive when its ideas can be shared. (Also, try out our iPhone app, and an Android app is coming soon.)
