What smartphone, what PC, what tablet... not everybody has a multitude of devices, not everyone can comfortably read LCD screens for lengthy period, not everyone finds it comfortable to curl up in an armchair with a 24" monitor... so for many people these are not choices unless they spend money they might not have on tech they don't want to read something they should be able to read on a device of their choice...

It's not a perfect world El. Businesses can't always serve every single constituency that they'd like.

It's a business first and foremost, and F&SF magazine is obviously thinking that its best business odds lie with those inside the reach of the Kindles platform. Will they, can they? No one knows. We'll find out. |

![]() I wonder how many people simply stop visiting do to all this childish OCD repetition of the very same stuff in ever place they look on MR. Funny how as this very objectionable behavior increases as it does from time to time that the activity on MR seems as if it decreases. You all might believe you are helping, you are not. Discuss is ones and be done with it already. |

I saw a documentary on wild horses on TV last night. From what little I've seen, publishers are a lot like horses. They breed faster than than the environment can support. A slow painful death seems inevitable for some. |

I am less in the minority then you think. The problem is you think this is a good thing and that everyone should be able to deal with maybe stripping DRM and converting. Well, I'll give you the reality of this. Not everyone can. Not everyone wants to. Not everyone will want to be bothered even if they can. Not everyone will want to give their money to Amazon. And by everyone, I mean everyone not already reading Kindle eBooks in the native format. So really, if you think this is a good deal for F&SF, it's not and it never will be.

the first thing i did was get the 14 day "free" trial of Asimov and Analog been a long time since i tried to read one of these ol' time favorites and that was it - you could read them but there was no art, pictures or funnies or graphics of any kind - not even want ads (do they even do this any more in the print version?) - just a pool of text - pretty dull since i was expecting the actual magazines cancelled quite quickly does F&SF (which i had forgotten about) do this same thing? |

I just went to Fictionwise and saw something interesting: namely that the Author System is being updated. This may mean that their agreements have expired and it could be some terms of the new agreement that caused F&SF to pull the plug.

The magazines have always been DRM free at Fictionwise.

What about the Kindle versions - presumably they are too? Given my subscriptions run out in one issue. FSF ran out a while ago, and never resubscribed, was just getting them ad hoc with no other option. |
