It worked! The Mr. Coffee iced tea maker did it. It's a mess to clean if you use loose tea leaves,(I ended up using a toothbrush to get all the tea leaves out of the grooves in the bottom of the basket), but it did work, the tea turned out great. I used the raspberry flavored black tea from Adagio.

I like that you can add sugar/extra flavorings right in the basket with the tea leaves. The hot water squirts into the basket and dissolves the sugar. And apparently the opening that drains tea into the pitcher is small - no tea leaves showed up in the finished tea.

Congrats, Shel I still make sun tea, but have wondered about those tea makers. I have a friend that freezes her tea in ice cube trays. Then when she wants ice in her tea, it won't dilute the flavor.

Is the basket removable? Would it help to use some kind of tea bag or filter for the loose leaves? Or would that change the flavor?

coffee mocha in my cup

There is this regional thing here called "Mate" (I'm from Argentina btw).
It consists in a sort of cup made usually from pumpkin (small ones) carved on the inside, with a fine straw with a filter at the begging (usually copper, but can be wood crafted).
You fill the cup with "Yerba mate", its something like tea leaves, but it consists on various parts of the plant (leaves, small branches, etc, hence the filter).
Then you pour hot water (usually the best water temperature for mate is around 85°C) and you drink.

The basket is removable, thank goodness. And you can rinse the water reservoir too, you just can't submerge the unit. I'm sure some sort of filter would work, since they say it works with tea bags, too, I just didn't have one. Anything porous enough to let the water through at a fast enough rate so it doesn't back up and overflow should work, I'd guess.

What's in my cup? Raspberry iced tea!!

Hi Rainmaker, and welcome to the MobileRead forums. Thanks for sharing that photo with us. There was a recent thread about this drink, but I was having a hard time understanding how people were 'carrying around' gourds for drinking it. The photo makes it quite clear.

Welcome to MR and thank you for sharing that. I also looked it up in the Wiki for more information. Do you make your own gourd cup?

Let me know how it works if you use a filter. I might be interested in getting one for this summer.

Will do, dreams m'dear.

For someone from the Southern US, using one of these is probably akin to some sort of sacrilege, but it works, so I don't care!

I wish I could share the name of the unbranded Keemun I bought... But how can I tell you the name if it's unbranded?!? Really tasty tea! In fact I'm drinking a cup right now.

I bought the last remaining stock at a tiny hole-in-the-wall Chinese import shop in Kyoto. They speak no English and very little Japanese. Unfortunately my knowledge of Mandarin is just a bit better than my knowledge of Quantum Physics, so no help there either... All I got from them was "Keemun. Good Good."
