Latinandgreek, great that it works for you. Actually I personally did consider an Ipad2 (in spite of all its drawbacks) but find both iOS and Android to be not quite ready yet and got a Windows 7 tablet. It is good to have choices -- as mentioned the only thing that annoys me is people claiming that missing functionality is a "feature" and good for users.

Yes and no. I do think the Playbook is not quite ready yet. Besides, already having a 5" phone a 7" device doesn't appeal to me. 5" works great for books and is acceptable even for newspapers (with newspaper direct). I still think WebOS has the most potential, but who knows how that will play out in the real world.

The mobile OS's need another year or two before they will be really useful as computing devices -- and by that time Windows 8 should be up and running. I wanted a smaller device to use around the house and when traveling. So I finally decided on a Windows 7 tablet.

I think RIM would be getting a lot less flak if they'd just said 'Hey, we're making a tablet for Blackberry business users that fits right into your corporate IT structure and doesn't require any more support than the BB phones you already have' - instead of which they seem to be trying to pitch it as a catch-all, do-everything wonder-tablet that tries to satisfy consumers and business alike, and struggles on both fronts.

Andy Ihnatko at the Chicago Sun-Times has had high hopes for the Playbook since it was announced, and writes a pretty fair Playbook non-review ("I hesitate to formally review the PlayBook because it doesn’t appear to be truly finished yet…") here; he also covers the LG G-Slate too.

Worth a read.

Cheers, Pete.

Actually RIM has said that from the very beginning. Every press release on the Playbook they've talked about how integrated the playbook would be with enterprise systems and how it would act as an extension of a BB device. I actually lost interest in the Playbook because I knew you really needed a BB to use it.

But the media doesn't listen. They are going to compare it with whom they want and slam it for not carrying features it was not intended to have.

Does the iPad vs Kindle come to mind. How many times did Besos say they are not in the same space, and how well did the media listen?

I moved from years of being an avid Windows Mobile user to an original Palm Pre. I loved WebOS and still think it’s superior to any other mobile OS I’ve seen so far. My issue with the Palm was the lousy build quality of the Pre and the toybox apps library that was available at the time. I soon moved to a Samsung Moment Android phone, (and then to my current HTC EVO 4G) and while I believe WebOS is the superior linux based mobile OS, Android was OK, and more customizable due to the plethora of apps available.

Since HP bought Palm, I have not ventured back into that arena, but from what I’ve read in the blogs the build quality has improved; but the app library, not so much. I’m still keeping my eye on it.

But the media doesn't listen.
The media is not the public relations arm for these corporations. Their audience is going to compare the two devices, and so they cover that in their reviews.

It is also of note that one of the two Rim CEO's has been very public in his disregard for Jobs, for Apple, and for the iPad. That he too sells a tablet will naturally invite comparisons.

Quote:
And to usher in the era of a fully browsable mobile Web, RIM is positioning its upcoming PlayBook Blackberry Tablet as super Web-capable. “It will be 3 to 4 times faster than the iPad,” boasts Balsillie.

RIM even put out out this teaser video showing how much faster the PlayBook is at several browsing tasks than the iPad, including its support for Flash.

Due respect and all, but whilst RIM's original press release from September last year may have emphasised the device as being enterprise-ready (and also "super convenient for both work and play" btw...) more recently they've been more concerned with their 'consumer friendly experience' and their work with leading gaming developers and music stores.

So, with RIM's focus if not shifting from away from the 'pro' user, then at least broadening to encompass consumers, it's not unreasonable to come to the same conclusions as 'the media' who appear to repeat such press releases verbatim, no?

Cheers, Pete

Users report BlackBerry PlayBooks failing to restart: The sudden death syndrome's cause and fix are so far unknown

Just finished the Inhatko review. That G-Slate sounds really, really, sweet if you can deal with the lack of 4:3...until you see the price.

Why? Why?
