I can't find any libraries in my area that lend e-books, so my excitement has died down a bit... hopefully the millions of Kindle users wanting to borrow eBooks might prompt a library in my area to explore that option.

I do dread the ridiculous waiting lists to come in the short term with the Kindle influx, but long-term this should solidify ebook collections at public libraries.

Luckily I have a good decade's backlog of reading (paper and not) to tide me over.

I'll admit it's a best case scenario, but I'm only going by what's being said by Overdrive itself. It's possible that Overdrive will do as you say and only allow so many copies regardless of format to be loaned out. But, as I said, that isn't how it's set up currently.
Right now, most libraries are buying in ePub and/or PDF. SO in some cases the same eBook with have x copies in ePub and y copies in PDF. The ePub can only be borrowed x times at once and the PDF can be borrowed y times at once. There is no ePub can possibly be borrowed x+y times and the PDF could be borrowed up to x+y times. It would be totally unfair if Kindle users can check out a PDF and get an AZW in return.

What we are thinking is that the ePub will be changed to give an ePub or an AZW and if that is the case, yes, the wait times will increase dramatically. I highly doubt libraries will suddenly get an additional x copies in AZW to go with the ePub.

In fact we don't know, and we're not all thinking the same thing. The .azw downloads may indeed be additional copies to go with the ePub, we just don't know yet.

Even if wait times do increase, so what? Kindle users have the same right to access their library services as anyone else. If that results in greater wait times, so be it. I'm getting pretty irritated at the implication that it would be better for Kindle users to do without than for ePub users to wait longer.

With regard to increased wait times, perhaps the lending period should be reduced to 5 or 7 days. This 21 day thing is too long. I'm sure there are some who "return" their copies early; I do.

I agree. Some libraries only lend for 14 days and I think that's appropriate. But one thing that needs to be done is to have directions clearly shown how to return an ePub early when its done with early.

That's probably one of the most sensible things said in this thread.

Amazon is brilliant and revolutionary. Sure, it's been done before, but not on a scale this grand. Bravo.

(I think I'm not even being sarcastic, either.)
